Melissa Lewis Murder or Mystery
This Friday, on Dateline NBC, a report about the murder of Melissa Lewis will appear. Lewis was a lawyer in Fort Lauderdale who had worked for the defunct firm of Rothstein Rosenfeldt Adler. The Miami New Times reports that a highly compensated attorney, 39 at the time of her death, was discovered in a canal in Plantation, Florida, with her trademark red Prada bag and a Judith Ripka ring. According to Dateline, the guy responsible for her death was Tony Villegas, a railroad engineer and the husband of her best friend Debra's husband.
In March of 2008, Melissa Britt Lewis disappeared without a trace. Her body was discovered in a canal in Plantation, Florida, sometime after she went missing. Melissa Lewis, an attorney, forgot to show up for work, so her employer contacted the authorities. There was evidence in the house search that suggested she had been ambushed upon returning home. She had pepper spray all over the inside of her garage.
The investigation revealed that Melissa Lewis had worked that day and made a trip to Publix nearby. Then when she got home, there was a surprise waiting for her.
When her body was discovered, her distraught loved ones were at a loss to understand who would have wished to see her dead. The authorities eventually led to Tony Villegas, the husband of Melissa Lewis' best friend, Debra. Debra's marriage to Tony Villegas has been rocky for some time.
Tony was rumored to be an abusive and violent man. Melissa Britt Lewis and Debra Villegas were each other's rock during their trials. On the other hand, Tony Villegas thought that Melissa, the selfless caretaker that she was, had encouraged her buddy to break up with him.
Debra Villegas might have relied on Melissa the same way she always has, even after her divorce. According to the authorities, Tony Villegas would not have let that happen, and Melissa's death was the result of her friendship with Debra, whom he blamed for the separation between him and Tony. Tony took matters into his own hands to finally remove Melissa from their lives.
Autopsy results reveal that Melissa Lewis was strangled and her body thrown in a canal. Triangulation based on cell phone locations led police to suspect Tony Villegas in Melissa's death.
Melissa Lewis, according to her friends and family, was an intellectual and driven advocate for the marginalized. She took pride in her cleanliness and the meals she prepared in her kitchen. Their loss was tragic and pointless.
The jury convicted Tony Villegas guilty of murdering Melissa Lewis, and he was given a life sentence.

If the names Rothstein, Rosenfeldt, and Adler ring a bell. It's the same illustrious law company that helped facilitate the Rothstein Ponzi scheme. Many people wondered in 2010 when the scandal broke if Melissa Lewis' death had anything to do with what she knew about the scheme, given that both Scott Rothstein and her friend Debra were accused of being involved in it.
The murder of Melissa Lewis, on the other hand, was a domestic incident in which she bitterly rejected her husband exacting his vengeance.
