Early life

His parents were Dolores (née Warner), a bookkeeper, and Mark Alexander Modine, a drive-in theatre manager, and he was the youngest of seven children.

When Ralph Jacobus Fairbanks died, his great-granddaughter Nola Modine Fairbanks inherited his throne.  Modine spent numerous years in Utah, relocating about every two years.

His father's drive-in cinemas were being demolished because the property beneath them was worth more than the theatres themselves.

Matthew Modine attended and graduated from Mar Vista High School in Imperial Beach, California, in 1977.
