Winstead had aspirations of being a professional ballerina as a child, and she took part in several local productions. Because of her height, she had to give up ballet when she was an adolescent. You know your body has to stay that way for your entire life… you know, it's quite taxing on your muscles and bones,” she said later. “I understood fairly early on that I was already too tall by the time I was 13,” she said. Having given up on a dancing career, Winstead decided to pursue a career in acting. She had to be homeschooled through much of high school because she was still a teenager at the time.

Acting career

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, starring Donny Osmond, was one of Winstead's many stage credits. Afterward, she appeared in a number of television shows, including Touched by an Angel and Promised Land, where she had guest parts. Passions, which aired on NBC from 1999 to 2000, was her first prominent role. Her departure from the show was due to the fact that she had one of the smallest parts on the show, which allowed her to leave “quite simply.”  In the short-lived CBS drama series Wolf Lake (2001–2002), Winstead played the character's daughter, played by Tim Matheson. After only ten episodes, the show was abruptly put on hold. In 2004, Winstead had a minor role in MTV's Monster Island, a made-for-TV film. As a recent high school senior about to embark on a vacation with friends, she rejected the part of Cinderella in the film A Cinderella Story (where she met Riley Stearns, her future husband).

For the first time since Checking Out, she was cast as the major antagonist in the Walt Disney Pictures picture Sky High, about a high-flying school for young superheroes, where she had a minor role in 2005. When asked what she thought of her role, Winstead stated, “It's a great “I was all over the place. Depending on who you ask, I was either the sidekick's hero or the hero's sidekick.”  The film was released on July 29, 2005, receiving favorable reviews, and budgeted at US$35 million, it grossed US$63.9 million domestically.

The production was a commercial success but received a mixed response from critics. According to James Berardinelli, Winstead “does as competent a job as one might anticipate under these dreadful circumstances.” Felix Gonzalez, Jr., on the other hand, deemed her “likable” in her character in the film.
