Lost Soul Aside – What We Know So Far

Lost Soul Aside has had an unusually long and winding road to its development. Originally a one-man project that went viral in 2016 due to its visuals and gameplay, UltiZero Games has since grown to be a highly polished character action game with a team of at least 29 people, if not more, after creator Yang Bing was approached by Sony, resulting in the formation of the company.

Following the release of a generous 17-minute gameplay trailer from the studio, here is everything we currently know about Lost Soul Aside.

Lost Soul Aside Release Date

While we haven't been given a release date as of the time of this trailer's release, it's safe to assume that we will receive more information at the China PlayStation Press Conference 2021 on April 29.

Lost Soul Aside

It was originally scheduled for release in 2020, but that date was not met. It comes as no surprise, given the ongoing global events, such as Covid-19.

Lost Soul Aside Platforms

Lost Souls Aside will be available for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC. Due to Sony's involvement in the game's publishing, don't expect an Xbox Series X or S release for at least the first 12 months after its announcement.

Playstation's Involvement with Lost Souls Aside Through the China Hero Project

When it comes to how and why PlayStation became involved with Lost Souls Aside, we turned to Niko Partners Senior Analyst Daniel Ahmad for an explanation. Niko Partners is one of the few firms that keep tabs on the Chinese video game market, according to the company.

“Because consoles were prohibited in China between 2000 and 2014, the vast majority of Chinese game developers concentrated their efforts on PC and mobile game development during this period,” he explains.

As a way to support Chinese game developers and bring more local games to its platform in China, Playstation launched the China Hero Project in 2016.”

The project provides developers with funding and support from PlayStation and its partners in order to assist them in developing and releasing the game throughout the world. This not only increases the appeal of PlayStation to Chinese gamers in Mainland China, but it also allows the company to release exclusive Chinese-developed titles to a global audience.

At the moment, there are 14 games involved in the project, with a few, such as Anna: Mutationem and Project Boundary, scheduled to be released this year.”

In addition to other recently announced titles such as Bright Memory: Infinite and Black Myth: Wu Kong, Lost Soul Aside serves as an example of what Chinese indie developers can bring to the table in terms of AAA console and PC games.”

Lost Souls Aside Gameplay

Kazer is the protagonist of Lost Soul Aside, and he is accompanied on his journey by a crystal dragon, which Yang Bing described in an interview as “a crystal dragon of light.”

We don't learn the dragon's name during the gameplay trailer, but we do learn that, despite the fact that it appears to be a dragon, it is actually not one. Instead, it can take on any form it desires, all while communicating with the other monstrous beings you encounter throughout the game world.

In terms of what to expect from the final product, we got a pretty good idea from the gameplay trailer. Combat is lightning fast, with witch time reminiscent of Bayonetta, and a variety of weapon types ranging from rapiers to giant buster swords reminiscent of Final Fantasy VII Remake, among others.

The action takes place in real-time, with weapon swapping appearing to be instantaneous. At one point, Kazer even conjures up a wall that he uses as a protective shield. A lot happens during battle, which leads us to wonder if there are any visual indicators that can be toggled to make avoiding enemy attacks a little bit easier for players.

Lost Soul Aside Plot

Depending on how the gameplay trailer is interpreted, Lost Aside appears to be primarily focused on Kazer and the crystal dragon as they attempt to persuade more powerful beings to join their cause in some form or another. Most likely in a similar way to how the crystal dragon transforms into Kazer's weapon or a surfboard when the situation demands it.

Apart from that, Kazer seems to be being pursued by authorities, and one of his combatants even refers to him as “inhuman” (as opposed to “humane”).

Although there isn't much dialogue between Kazer and the dragon, there is a lot of banter between the two, with the latter asking every now and then to “take over” from Kazer in combat, suggesting that it may have its own motivations that aren't in line with Kazer's.

Looking forward to seeing how Lost Soul Aside comes together. More information should be available at the China PlayStation Press Conference 2021, which will take place on April 29.

Perhaps, by the time the PS5 is ready to ship, Sony will have resolved its ongoing PS5 supply issues, which have plagued markets around the world for several months.
