The series starts in the fictional college town of Hilltowne, Michigan, where sisters Mel (Melonie Diaz) and Maggie Vera (Sarah Jeffery) live with their mother Marisol (Valerie Cruz), who is assaulted and killed by an unknown evil force shortly afterward. Mel and Maggie learn three months later that they have an older half-sister, Macy Vaughn (Madeleine Mantock), who has been kept a secret by their mother for years but has lately come to Hilltowne for a new job at the local university where the sisters are also students.
Lightning flashes and the house's electricity goes out when Macy sees her sisters for the first time at the family's Vera Manor, signifying that the sisters' magical powers have been triggered now that they are all together. Macy gains telekinesis, Mel, the middle sister, has the ability to freeze time, and Maggie, the youngest, has the ability to hear people's thoughts.
Marisol had bound her daughters' powers when they were born to protect them and let them to live regular lives, but on the night she was murdered, she was in the process of unbinding them. It is a crimson Victorian home that looks identical to Halliwell Manor from the first season of Charmed.
The exterior sequences for Hilltowne University during the first season were shot on the Point Grey Campus of the University of British Columbia. Filming for the pilot episode took place between March 19 and April 7, 2018. Filming for the balance of the first season started on August 13, 2018, and finished on April 26, 2019, after the pilot was picked up and ordered to series.
Filming for the second season began on July 24, 2019, and was set to finish on April 16, 2020. However, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, production was halted early on March 12, 2020, with only 19 of the 22 episodes ordered finished.
