The HBO show “Legendary” is a revolutionary show in its own right. According to IndieWire, the show introduces viewers to the LGBTQ ball scene that was popular in New York City and other cities throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including Los Angeles.
When series such as “RuPaul's Drag Race” and “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” are bringing LGBTQ superstars to the forefront, “Legendary” takes viewers back to the origins that inspired these pop-culture mainstays.
If you've ever seen the FX series “Pose” or simply listened to Madonna's album “Vogue,” you're probably familiar with the ballroom scene in New York City. Because it is a competition show, the contestants on “Legendary” incorporate elements of ball culture, such as voguing, with a dash of “RuPaul's Drag Race” thrown in for good measure.
The film “Legendary” received overwhelmingly positive reviews (via The Hollywood Reporter). In its capacity to feature queer and Black musicians while still paying respect to LGBTQ culture, the event is considered innovative. This news that HBO has opted to renew the show for a third season comes as no surprise to anyone.
