Oswald was born to Robert Edward Lee Oswald Sr. and Marguerite Frances Claverie on October 18, 1939, in New Orleans, Louisiana. His father died of a heart attack two months before Oswald was born.

When Oswald was in first grade (1945), his mother uprooted the family and relocated to Dallas, Texas. Oswald was a restless and erratic student who frequently changed schools. His mother had taken him to New York for a short time when he was younger, and he had spent the seventh grade there.

Oswald was evaluated by a psychiatrist at a juvenile reformatory because of his chronic absences from school; the psychiatrist concluded that Oswald suffered from personality disturbance with schizoid traits and blamed his mother's coldness for many of his difficulties.

Oswald dropped out of high school at the age of 17 to join the Marines after attending a total of 12 different schools.

Finally, he joined the US Marine Corps Reserve. Very quickly after that, he went to the Soviet Union. As soon as he arrived, he declared his communist ideology and stated his intention to become a Soviet citizen.

When he first applied for Soviet citizenship, he ran across opposition from the police. Deliberately injuring himself and requiring a week's stay in a Soviet hospital allowed him to extend his time in Russia.

Although he was not able to enroll at Moscow State University, Oswald was allowed to stay in the Soviet Union. Instead, the Gorizont Electronics Factory in Minsk, Belarus was where he would be putting in his time.

He was able to live relatively comfortably by Soviet standards thanks to the government-subsidized flat and money from the factory. Oswald, however, grew weary of life in Cuba and submitted a petition to the US Embassy to return home that year. In June of 1961, he embarked on the United States.

Oswald had a hard time finding steady employment after his return to the United States since he frequently loathed his jobs and had conflicts with his supervisors and coworkers.

Oswald's life and ideas deteriorated over the next two years. In retrospect, it is clear that he attempted to kill retired American major general Edwin Walker, but was not indicted at the time.
