League of Gods (Chinese: 3D) is a 2016 Hong Kong-Chinese fantasy film directed by Koan Hui and co-produced by Charles Heung and Wilson Yip, based on Xu Zhonglin's 16th-century novel Investiture of the Gods, and starring Jet Li, Tony Leung, Fan Bingbing, Louis Koo, Mark Huang, Angelababy, Wen Zhang, Andy On, and Jacky Heung.

On July 29, 2016, the film was released in China.

The film was a box-office flop due to criticism from cinema reviewers and audiences for its lack of 3D effects, story, and characters; it eventually won the Golden Broom Awards for Worst Picture and was nominated for Worst Director.

Angelababy got the Hong Kong Golden Plum Award for Worst Supporting Actress for her work as Lan Die in the film. However, the film was nominated for Best Costume Make-up Design at the 36th Hong Kong Film Awards, but it lost to The Monkey King 2.

Over the weekend, Jackie Chan's Skiptrace was surpassed by the high-budget CGI fantasy movie League of Gods, which starred some of the most well-known actors from Hong Kong and Mainland China.

The action-comedy “Gods,” starring Jet Li, Tony Leung, Huang Xiaoming, Angelababy, and Fan Bingbing, debuted at RMB 201 million ($30.9 million) over the weekend, beating out Jackie Chan's Skiptrace, which made RMB 140 million ($21.1 million) in its second weekend of release.

Since its release, Skiptrace has made RMB 732 million ($112.6 million), making it the highest-grossing movie of an otherwise underwhelming summer moviegoing season.

The overall box office in July, according to preliminary figures, was just RMB 4.5 billion ($677 million), an 18% decline from the record-breaking figures established in July 2015 and the third month this year to experience negative growth.

League of Gods (2016) Review

Sometimes erroneously labeled as a “Chinese X-Men,” despite having very little in common with the franchise aside from CGI and powers, Koan Hui's League of Gods is actually much closer – in concept, story, and visuals – to Alex Proyas' Gods of Egypt, not that the marketing team would want to play that particular angle, given that film's well-publicized flop (which we actually liked, for all its faults).
