The First Monday in September is Usually Observed as Labor Day

The first day of labor On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a measure declaring a national holiday on the first Monday in September of every year. By 1894, the holiday had been enacted in 23 additional states.

Why is Labor Day Celebrated?

Do you have a job, whether it be at home, on a farm, or in an office? Do you possess a strong work ethic, too?

  • The purpose of Labor Day is to honor American workers like you! The founders intended it to pay tribute to the American worker, the backbone of the most productive economy in the world and whose work ethic has led to one of the most acceptable standards of living anywhere.
  • All of this was motivated by a faith in political and economic democracy.
  • Of course, Labor Day preserved the quality of life of American workers as well as honored them.
  • The Labor movement was established in the late 1800s to address some of the significant issues of the period, such as extended work hours and a lack of vacation time.

Labor Day: Who “Invented” It?

Labor union leader Peter J. Maguire proposed a holiday commemorating American workers in 1882 (although more recent research suggests that his brother Matthew may have had the same concept).

  • Peter Maguire was a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor and the general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners.
  • Simply put, the selected date was “convenient.” According to Peter Maguire, this date would be ideal because it “almost falls between the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving.”
  • According to recent research, Matthew Maguire proposed the holiday in 1882 while acting as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York.
  • Maguire later became the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, New Jersey.

We know the Central Labor Union approved and implemented a Labor Day proposal!

What to Do Today to Celebrate Labor Day?

Many Americans continue to put in more fantastic hours and take fewer vacation days than people in other western countries, even though the American workforce has changed significantly since the industrial revolution.

  • We all want to live a comfortable standard of life, yet we are all glued to our professions with little downtime.
  • Think back on all your hard work on this day of honor, and if you can, take a minute to unwind because you deserve this national day of relaxation.
  • After all, we spend most of our time at work. Think about the many American laborers who created our roads, infrastructure, and more.

Attend a Labor Day parade if you can. Alternately, have a picnic or cookout like our ancestors' employees did many years ago and took advantage of the remaining few days of summer!
