Early life

After Lindiwe Chibi was shot by her boyfriend Dan Mokoena in 2004, Mbau took over the role of Doobsie on Muvhango.

She was fired from the position a year later, supposedly because she was spending too much time partying and appearing in the Sunday tabloids. In the second season of Mzansi, Mbau was cast as Mbali, a character he had previously appeared in.

The show was not picked up for a third season by SABC 1. Mbau went on to play Zee in the SABC 1 mini-series After 9 later that year.

In 2012, she served as a special guest judge on SABC 1’s Turn It Out for the second time. Actress Ekasi: Our Stories appeared on E.tv’s anthology series Ekasi: Our Stories in 2013.  On DStv’s Mzansi Magic, she played Sindisiwe Sibeko in the miniseries Like Father Like Son and appeared in the DStv Vuzu documentary I Am.

Mbau’s autobiography, Bitch, Please!, was published in August of that year. Khanyi Mbau was written by Lesley Mofokeng, a journalist in South Africa.

Mbau appeared on E.tv’s Reality Check-in 2013 in a docu-reality series. With her own talk show on eKasi+, Mbau began hosting Katch It! With Khanyi in the same year. Late in 2014, the show was given a second season order. It overtook the audience share of SABC 2’s Motswako to become the most-watched talk show in South Africa.

In the first week of November 2014, Katch It With Khanyi had 1,669,000 viewers its first week of airing.  The program was nominated for the 2015 South African Film and Television Awards during its second season.

Strictly Come Dancing’s seventh season had Mbau participate. She and her partner Quintus Jansen were eliminated from the competition in week seven after failing to get enough votes. Super-fans of Mbau voiced their dismay and questioned the fairness of the voting procedure, which sparked an early uproar on social media. In July of that year, MTV Africa introduced lip-sync fights, with Mbau winning the competition.
