Duckworth (born June 17, 1987) is an American rapper, song composer, and producer. He has been hailed as one of the most influential rappers of his generation and one of the best ever rappers since his mainstream breakthrough in 2012 with Good Kid, M.A.A.D City.

As a part of the hip hop ensemble Black Hippy, he joins fellow Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) artists Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, and Schoolboy Q in addition to his solo endeavors.

As a teenager, Lamar released a mixtape, named Y.H.N.I.C. (Hub City Threat Minor of the Year), which attracted local notice and led to his signing with TDE, an indie record company based in Compton, California.

Overly Dedicated, his first retail album in 2010, helped him break out in the music industry. Section.80, his first studio album, was released the following year and featured his first song, “HiiiPoWeR.” He had a sizable internet fan base and had worked with a number of well-known hip-hop artists at this point.

Lamar’s major-label debut album, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, was released in 2012 after he signed a record deal with Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records. The Recording Industry Association of America awarded it its highest honor: triple platinum certification (RIAA).

While recording To Pimp a Butterfly (2015), the rapper experimented with many genres of music including funk and jazz, as well as spoken word. RIAA certified it platinum, making it his first number one album on the Billboard 200.  A compilation of demos from To Pimp a Butterfly’s recording sessions, Untitled Unmastered (2016), was released in 2016.

As the first non-classical and non-jazz album to get a Pulitzer Prize for Music, Damn (2017), he published his fourth album. The first track, “Humble,” topped the US Billboard Hot 100.  On Black Panther’s soundtrack, he composed and produced 14 songs in 2018. Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, Lamar’s fifth and last album with TDE, will be released on May 13, 2022.

Another collaboration with Adam Levine and The Lonely Island resulted in the song “YOLO,” which he sang about in the video.
