When asked about rumors that the program might be getting ready to end, Thompson responded to Charlamagne Tha God late Thursday on Comedy Central's “Hell of a Week” with, “Fifty is a good number to stop at. He jokingly said, “Well, I need to start planning,” but he also said, “There could be a lot of truth to that report.”

Season 48 of “SNL” on NBC premieres this fall. The executive producer and founder of the program, Lorne Michaels, turns 80 during the show's 50th season of sketch comedy.

Michaels, 77, announced in December that he will continue working until the 2024–2025 season on “CBS Morning.”

Talking about his “very emotional” SNL performance and Season 2 of his NBC sitcom, Kenan Thompson

He said to King, “I'd like to see that through, and I've got a sense that'd be a wonderful moment to depart. “However, here's the thing: I won't ever want the show to be poor. I'm too invested in it. My life's labor has been this.

“SNL” and Michaels have been contacted by USA TODAY for comment.

If Michaels leaves, Thompson warned that the program would be subject to network budget cuts because “he's such a legend that he keeps off those, like, corporate wolves… This is business.

Therefore, if the budget is cut, you probably won't be able to produce the same kind of show. If someone tries to fill his shoes, you know, it's a fantastic opportunity for NBC to save money as well, Thompson said. “He's the one who's had his touch on the whole thing.”
