His grandmother and both of his grandfathers were copper miners, as was his mother, who worked as a postmistress. While serving in the United States Army, his paternal grandpa boxed. The Morenci mine, where Gaethje's father Ray worked for 36 years, will see the retirement of its last copper miner in September 2019.

Mixed Martial Arts Career

After wrestling UFC stars like Georges St-Pierre and Clay Guida and his future opponent Donald Cerrone as a freshman in college, Gaethje first encountered MMA as a sophomore at the University of Northern Colorado.

His instructors informed him that he would need a good grade point average in order to participate in an amateur battle. After this conversation, he decided to try out the sport. During the pre-season of his second year (08′-09′), Gaethje made his amateur debut, scoring a slam knockout on August 2, 2008.

Gaethje made his professional MMA debut on August 20, 2011, against future UFC fighter Kevin Croom after being 7-0 as an amateur. First-round smash by Gaethje was enough to end the fight since Croom had tried a submit.

Gaethje achieved a 7-0 professional record in Colorado and Arizona, with six stoppage victories. Drew Fickett, a UFC veteran, was one of his first opponents. Twelve seconds into the first round, Gaethje was knocked out of the ring.
