Junji Ito is famous for his dark & disturbing take on the horror manga genre. His works have sold millions of copies throughout the world & they are always accompanied by captivating artwork, whether it is a simple spiral or a deadly lady bent on revenge.
Netflix, never one to miss a trick, is now streaming Maniac: Tales of the Japanese Macabre, Junji Ito's latest collection. 20 of Ito's tales are adapted across the show's 12 episodes. Of course, it's perhaps not strange to discover the same here considering that several of the original stories finish abruptly or in a disappointing fashion.

The most successful episodes are those that are allowed the entire 22 minutes to develop their own plots & themes. Great examples of this may be seen in works like “Tomb Town,” in which a steadily increasing sense of foreboding leads to a satisfying conclusion.
There are definitely issues with Maniac, notably with the odd tone that some of the episodes have. A positive experience here is more than compensated for by the absence of any truly terrible aspects.
