She relocated to New York and played Janis Joplin in the revue Beehive, alongside Angelo Badalamenti.

In 1985, Badalamenti was creating the score for David Lynch's Blue Velvet while also serving as Isabella Rossellini's vocal teacher. A pivotal moment in Blue Velvet was supposed to contain This Mortal Coil's rendition of Tim Buckley's “Song to the Siren,” with lead vocals by Elizabeth Fraser. When obtaining the rights to use the song proved prohibitively expensive, it was suggested that Badalamenti compose a pop song in the same style, with lyrics written by Lynch.

After that, Badalamenti and Lynch went on to create and produce more songs for Cruise, the majority of which were included on her debut album, Floating into the Night (1989). Warner Bros.

Records published the album on September 12, 1989, and it charted on Billboard the following year. It also served as inspiration for Lynch's Industrial Symphony No. 1, which Cruise performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music while “floating” from a harness dozens of feet above the stage.
