Mulaney was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 26th, 1982. Both his mother, Ellen, and his father, Charles, were attorneys and partners at Skadden Arps and Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law.
John's parents are devout Irish Catholics, and as a child, he served as an altar boy at their parish. In his family, he is one of five kids.
