Jena Laine Malone (/in melon/; born November 21, 1984) is an actress, musician, and photographer from the United States. She has won numerous awards for her appearances in both independent and mainstream blockbuster films, including nominations for a Golden Globe Award and two Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Malone was born in Sparks, Nevada, and grew up in Las Vegas, where her mother performed in local theatre performances. Malone persuaded her mother to relocate to Los Angeles because she aspired to be an actor.
Anjelica Huston cast Malone in her television film Bastard Out of Carolina (1996) after auditioning for various roles. She starred in major studio movies such as Contact (1997) and Stepmom (1998). (1998).
Malone began the 2000s with the independent psychological thriller Donnie Darko (2001), which became a cult classic. Malone was born in Sparks, Nevada, on November 21, 1984, to Deborah Malone and Edward Berge. Her father is of Norwegian origin, and she also has Irish ancestors. Malone claims that her mother got pregnant following a one-night encounter with her father, who was married to another woman at the time.
Malone grew up with her mother and her mother's girlfriend. “They were lovers,” according to Malone. “I had two mothers, and it was fantastic.” She was estranged from her father for much of her childhood but reconnected with him as an adult.

Malone made his professional acting debut in the film Bastard Out of Carolina (1996). The same year, she played the girlfriend of a young guy (Hayden Christensen) whose dying father (Kevin Kline) is building a house in the drama Life as a House (2001). Though the film was not a box-office success, it became known as a cult classic.
Malone co-produced the independent comedy-drama American Girl (2002), in which she co-starred with Brad Renfro and Alicia Witt as a suicidal young lady whose father is incarcerated.
