Jeffrey Dahmer is considered one of the most horrible serial killers in the United States. When he finally admitted to raping, killing, dismembering, and eating several of his victims, he was given 15 consecutive life sentences in 1996.
However, he only lived to serve three years. Since Jeffrey Dahmer didn't get the death penalty for his horrible crimes, you might wonder how he died.
The Netflix documentary series Conversations with a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes is based on his story. Evan Peters (American Horror Story) plays Dahmer in the Netflix drama Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.
The second one looks at this horrible person from the point of view of the people hurt by him and the racist and systemic problems “that allowed one of America's most notorious serial killers to continue his killing spree in plain sight for over a decade.”
Dahmer, also known as the Milwaukee Cannibal, stayed free for 13 years after killing his first person, Steven Hicks, in 1978. Still, let's talk about how Jeffrey Dahmer died and if his victims' families felt justice was done.
How Did Jeffrey Dahmer Die?
Wisconsin was the first state to eliminate the death penalty in 1853. Christopher Scarver, also in prison, beat Dahmer to death on November 28, 1994. Both men lived at the Wisconsin Columbia Correctional Facility.
Even though Dahmer did terrible things, he didn't get the death penalty, even though he wanted to die. (More about this later.) Scarver came to the prison around the same time as Dahmer in 1992. He was there to serve a 25-year sentence for an armed robbery that turned into a murder.
The safety of the serial killer was a big worry for the prison staff. The New York Times said Dahmer's first year in prison was spent in protective isolation. As one of the most well-known killers in the state, authorities thought that killing him could give a prisoner an “honored place in the prison world.”
In July of 1992, a person tried to kill Dahmer. An inmate made a plastic knife and tried to cut Dahmer's throat with it, but it didn't work. No one was hurt, and the prison staff thought it was a one-time thing. Later, the authorities decided he was safe to be with the other 622 prisoners.
Dahmer was known to make other people in prison angry. Scarver said that the serial killer would tease other prisoners by making food like severed limbs and putting ketchup on it to make it look like blood.
“He went too far with some people, including prisoners and prison staff. Some people in prison are sorry for what they did, but he wasn't one of them. Scarver told the New York Post in 2015, “He would put them where people would be.”
Scarver tried to stay away from Dahmer because of how he behaved, but he always had a newspaper article about the cannibal's crimes in his pocket. Scarver lost it when he thought Dahmer had poked him in the back. He took a metal bar from the weight room and went to talk to Dahmer about the crimes he had done.
It only took two blows to the head with the bar to kill Dahmer. “I asked him if he did those things because they disgusted me so much. He was taken aback. Scarver told the Post, “Yes, he was.” “He didn't waste much time looking for the door. I got in his way.”
Dahmer's head was crushed, and an hour after he got to the hospital, he was said to be dead. He was 34. “He ended up dead. Scarver said of the killing, “I put his head down.”Rita Isbell, the sister of one of Dahmer's last victims, Errol Lindsey, said that she had expected Dahmer to kill himself in prison.
How Did Dahmer Get Caught?
On September 8, 1996, Jeffrey Dahmer was arrested after offering three men $100 to pose for naked pictures. Tracy Edwards, who was 32 at the time, agreed. When he got to Dahmer's apartment, he smelled something terrible and saw a box of hydrochloric acid, which Dahmer said was for cleaning.
Dahmer tried to handcuff Edwards's wrists together, but he could only get one. He then pulled out a knife and told Edwards to pose naked. After five scary hours, Edwards got away by saying he had to go to the bathroom. When Dahmer let his guard down, Edwards punched him, which made the serial killer fall over.
Edwards returned to Dahmer's apartment with the police, where they found Polaroids of dead bodies in the bedroom and severed heads in the fridge. Edwards told two police officers that a “freak” attacked him with a knife. “These are real,” said one officer as he showed the other the photos.
When Dahmer saw what the officer was holding, he attacked them and tried to fight being taken into custody, but he was too strong. As he was being held down, he is said to have said, “I should be dead for what I did.”
A team from the Criminal Investigation Bureau in Milwaukee did a more thorough search of Dahmer's apartment. They found four severed heads in the kitchen, seven skulls in Dahmer's bedroom, blood drips in the refrigerator, and two human hearts.
He also found a whole torso in his freezer and many other horrible things. At the time, the chief medical examiner said, “It was more like taking apart someone's museum than a real crime scene.”
