Eric Marlon Bishop (born December 13, 1967), better known as Jamie Foxx, is an American actor, comedian, and singer who has won an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Grammy Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
He joined the cast of the sketch comedy show In Living Color as a featured player in 1991 and stayed with the show until it ended in 1994. Following this success, Foxx was granted his television sitcom, The Jamie Foxx Show, in which he starred, co-created, and produced for five highly rated seasons on The WB Television Network from 1996 to 2001.
He later rose to prominence for his portrayal of Ray Charles in the 2004 biographical film Ray, for which he received the Academy Award, British Academy Film Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, Critics' Choice Movie Award, and Golden Globe Award for Best Actor, making him only the second actor to win all five major lead actor awards for the same performance.

Eric Marlon Bishop was born in Terrell, Texas on December 13, 1967. He is the son of Darrell Bishop (renamed Shahid Abdula after converting to Islam), who worked as a stockbroker at times, and Louise Annette Talley Dixon. Foxx was adopted and reared by his mother's adoptive parents, Estelle Marie (Nelson), a domestic worker and nursery operator, and Mark Talley, a yard worker, shortly after his birth. Foxx grew up in Terrell's black quarter, which was racially separated then.
He has had little touch with his birth parents, who were not present during his childhood. He has frequently cited his grandmother's influence in his life as one of the most important reasons for his success.

Foxx began playing the piano at the age of five.
He was raised in a conservative Baptist home, and as a teenager, he was a part-time pianist and choir director at Terrell's New Hope Baptist Church.
When he was in third grade, his teacher used him as a reward: if the class performed well, Foxx would tell them jokes. In 1989, Foxx began his career as a stand-up comedian. His acting career started in 1991 when he opted to join the cast of the sketch comedy television series In Living Color, for which he appeared in 95 episodes.
Foxx made his film debut as Baker in the fantasy comedy Toys in 1992. In 1994, he published his debut album, Peep This, which peaked at No.78 on the Billboard 200. Foxx's first significant film appearance was as a football player in Any Given Sunday in 1999.
