The Bear, a Hulu comedy-drama television series about a struggling Italian beef sandwich store in Chicago called The Original Beef in Chicagoland, became a hit sensation during its first season.
The series, which stars Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ayo Edebiri, Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, and Abby Elliot, opens with Carmy (White) coming home to Illinois following his brother's suicide.
Carmy's brother, Michael, left the restaurant to him, which upset Carmy because he was previously a prominent chef who worked in fine-dining venues in New York City before returning to Chicago.

Regarding the set design, Joseph stated, “My son and a young fellow he grew up with, Chris Storer, would come down here as youngsters. They were youngsters, and I let them hang out at the restaurant.”
“They erected this set inside a structure. And they led me to it. He added, “They wanted me to witness it. And my jaw fell. I was like, ‘Oh, my God'—from the floor to the ceiling, worktops to the equipment.

The restaurant in The Bear is modeled by the real-life restaurant Mr. Beef, a Chicago institution in the River North district that gained a cult following for its renowned Italian beef sandwiches. Mr. Beef's co-founder, Joseph Zucchero, died abruptly on March 1, 2023, at the age of 69.
According to NPR, Joseph and his brother, Dominic, founded Mr. Beef in the late 1970s and gradually established a reputation as a standard go-to for Italian sandwiches. The sandwich originated with their Italian immigrant forefathers in the early twentieth century.

At the moment, they could only afford the cow's less sensitive parts. With a little experimenting, they realized that cooking these less desirable slices for an extended period resulted in extremely tender meat.
According to Joseph's son Christopher, the key components of the Italian sandwich include slow-cooked beef slivers, an Italian relish known as giardiniera, good bread, and a variety of adjustable textures.
“It's strictly our root food,” Christopher explained. “It is our food here in Chicago.”
