“Puerta 7,” a gripping Netflix series that delves into the intense and often tumultuous world of soccer in Argentina, has captivated audiences with its dramatic portrayal of crime, corruption, and the complex interplay between power and passion. As viewers immerse themselves in the compelling narrative, a common question emerges: Is “Puerta 7” based on a true story?
In this article, we explore the origins of the series and shed light on the elements of reality that may have inspired its creation.
Is ‘Puerta 7' Based on a True Story?
‘Puerta 7' is not based on a true story. It does, however, reveal the brutal reality of Argentina's violent and corrupt football culture. It examines the power struggle inside the fans as well as its intersections with crime and politics.
More importantly, it delves into gang culture in South America as a whole and the impact it has on exploited poor families and children who join gangs to survive.
The series depicts this through a fictional Argentinian neighborhood that was shot on location in the nation. When asked what prompted him to create ‘Puerta 7,' inventor Martin Zimmerman stated:
“As a lifelong soccer fan, I've always wanted to explore the intersection between sport, politics, and crime in Argentina, which is not only one of the greatest incubators for world soccer talent in the world but also my mother's homeland.”
While not based on a true story, ‘Puerta 7' draws inspiration from real-life barra bravas and the impact they have on society.
It revolves around Ferroviarios Ftbol Club, a fictitious local football club, and all the lives that are influenced by it, both inside and without the club. Interestingly, the series was shot in Buenos Aires for authenticity. This is reasonable given that some young males from Buenos Aires' slums go on to join Barra Bravas.
