Is Hunter Schafer Transgender: Since its debut on Sunday night, HBO's new adolescent drama Euphoria has garnered a significant deal of attention for its unabashed and frank depiction of sex, drugs, and nudity among high school kids.

Despite the fact that former Disney Channel actress Zendaya received the most attention for her part as recovering addict Rue, it was her friend Jules (Hunter Schafer) who was the standout of the episode and was involved in the two most disturbing scenes.

Transgender model and Euphoria actress Hunter Schafer is well-known in the former capacity. Since Hunter Schafer's on-screen persona has just undergone a gender shift, many viewers are curious about his true identity, namely whether he is a she or a he. Is Hunter Schafer Transgender?

Schafer came out as transgender and gay on a radio broadcast in North Carolina [via Pop Buzz].

“I do prefer people to know that I'm not a cis girl because that's not something that I am or feel like I am,” she affirmed. The fact that I identify as transgender is something I take great pride in.

And the actress has been a vocal advocate for transgender equality. Such as her pivotal role in 2016 alongside her father Mac in fighting a state House measure that would have mandated the use of public bathrooms according to a person's assigned gender at birth.

Furthermore, Teen Vogue recognized Schafer as one of 21 young women under the age of 21 who were making a difference in 2017.

Is Hunter Schafer Transgender?

She told Harper's Bazaar, “I joined the suit to represent other transgender adolescents in North Carolina who are as devastated as I am, and to increase awareness and acceptance for transgender folks.”

Schafer has never felt any stigma associated with his gender transition. Furthermore, she admitted to being a lesbian in the near future in an interview with Dazed.

“I am closer to what you might call a Lesbian,”  she admitted.

Soon, though, her followers began to speculate about her sexual orientation, wondering if she was transgender, bisexual, or lesbian.

“Hunter Schafer is a lesbian. Female-identified people, please accept my congratulations. Someone tweeted, “You've taken the one thing that matters to me, and that's gone.”

The actress said, “I wish this were true, but I'd like to clarify that sadly, I'm like bi or pan or something.”

Many of Schafer's followers were both impressed and perplexed by her choice of words, but ultimately rallied behind her.

She may have been born a man, but she has always been herself. Her mother had seen that she had lost interest in the normal activities of a young boy, such as superheroes.

She preferred female superheroes like Hawkgirl and Catwoman to the standard male characters. She liked the color pink by the time she was three, and by then she was already wearing dresses. A key aspect of her journey to self-acceptance was the encouragement of her parents to explore her feminine side.

Parallels to her Euphoria role

First appearing as transgender high school student Jules Vaughn in the 2019 season of Euphoria, Schafer is a newcomer to the series. The actress stated she could relate to her TV character Jules because of their same name.

She felt that the hazy boundary between herself and Jules on the show was actually an asset to both. She believes that playing Jules is one of her favorite roles since she is able to be herself while doing the part.

How Did Hunter Schafer Gain Notoriety?

Schafer was born into a traditionalist household in Garden State. Mac Shafer, her father, is a preacher in the Presbyterian church. They attended several churches in Jersey, Arizona, and North Carolina while their children were growing up. The star of Euphoria was a vocal opponent of the North Carolina Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act even while still in high school.

 She advanced to the semifinals of the Presidential Scholars Program in her senior year. The actress had originally intended to study at Central Saint Martins in London after graduating from the High School Visual Arts program at the North Carolina School of the Arts in 2017. Ultimately, though, she decided to put her energy into her professional life.

Schafer was recognized for her HB2 advocacy in 2017 when she was named to Teen Vogue's “21 Under 21” list. Hillary Clinton even granted her an interview. She went on to walk the runway for such illustrious labels as Prada, Tommy Hilfiger, Vera Wang, Versace, and the late, lamented Thierry Mugler.

Schafer, who first gained attention as a model, debuted in the acting world with 2019's Euphoria. The actor, who was making her debut, received high marks for her performance. They even criticized the Emmys for omitting the 23-year-old.
