The “Insidious” trilogy has been terrifying viewers for more than a decade, and there are no signs that it will be stopping anytime soon. The release of a fifth instalment has already been confirmed, and it is expected to hit theatres in the near future. The reason for this is that when it comes to horror films, the dead don't stay dead for very long.
It's been three years since horror fans were terrified by demons from the region known as The Further, thanks to the release of “Insidious: The Last Key,” which took place in 2013. That film garnered $167 million worldwide on the strength of a $10 million budget as well, thus it seemed inevitable that another film would be made after that.
The supernatural saga's last two instalments have focused on prequels, but the fifth instalment will take a new route and bring back some fan favourites from the previous films. Furthermore, “Insidious 5” will be Patrick Wilson's feature film directorial debut, which is noteworthy in and of itself given his previous affiliation with the franchise. In addition to the anticipated release of “Insidious 5”, what else can fans look forward to?
The Insidious 5: The Last Key Story
The events of Insidious: Chapter 2 will take place ten years after the events of Insidious 5. According to the star and director, Patrick Wilson, Dalton Lambert has left home to attend college, and the storyline will apparently explore the “consequences” of the Lambert family's decisions in the coming months.
Insidious 5 Cast Members: Who Will be Returning for Insidious 5?
So far, the only confirmed cast members for the fifth film are Patrick Wilson, who will play Josh Lambert, and Ty Simpkins, who will play Josh Lambert's son Dalton Lambert.
Although she died in the first film, Lin Shaye has been a constant presence in the series as Elise Rainier, and we expect her to return as Elise's ghost, alongside Leigh Whannell and Angus Sampson, who played Elise's colleagues Specs and Tucker, respectively.
Several months before the announcement of Insidious 5, Shaye stated that she would be interested in returning to the franchise. ‘If we come back, I'm fine with everything,' she told ComingSoon.net. “This time, however, I'm in The Further, so that will be different,” she added.
In terms of the character and the tale, it was a really beautiful journey for me to discover… The experience is permanently imprinted on my memory, and I would welcome the opportunity to participate in another one.”
It is currently unknown whether Rose Byrne will reprise her role as Renai Lambert or Barbara Hershey will reprise her role as Josh's mother Lorraine, both of whom were last seen in the franchise in Insidious: Chapter 2. (The film Insidious: The Last Key made use of archival video of the couple.)
While Patrick Wilson is making his directorial debut, the script for Halloween Kills has been written by Halloween Kills writer Scott Teems, who was inspired by a story written by the franchise's co-creator Leigh Whannell.
The Plot of Insidious 5: What Will the Story of Insidious 5 be About?
For the time being, we don't have many plot information, but we do know that the fifth film will take place ten years after the events of Chapter 2, when Dalton is starting college.
When asked why he chose Insidious 5 as his directorial debut, Wilson gave some insights as to what we may expect from the film and how it links to the events of the first two instalments of the series.
Considering the lore of Insidious and the family in question, notably Tye and me, and the fact that our characters are hypnotised, “what does it do to a family after 10 years?” he explained further.
“It's been interesting to see Dalton go to college and see what happens. Seeing a young man go to college, experiencing all of the new things, and feeling like an outsider trying to fit in was quite moving. He possesses the power to project himself onto the astral plane and travel across it, something he is completely unaware of.
“Are we still under the influence of hypnosis after all this time?” Is there still a trance in the air? What effect does this have on your life? What effect does this have on your marriage? And then what happens to the bond between a parent and son?”
Just in case you missed it, at the conclusion of Chapter 2 Josh and Dalton consented to having their memories suppressed once more in order to forget everything they had learned about The Further and all of the demons it harboured, including the Bride in Black and the Lipstick-Face Demon.
The Release Date for Insidious 5 has been set
A new Insidious film has traditionally been released every two or three years since the series' inception. Assuming that filming on Insidious 5 will begin in 2021, the film will most likely be released about one year after the first instalment.
Filming for, for example, Insidious: The Last Key (the fourth movie) began in August 2016 and was released in January 2018; the first three films were released in August 2016. A release in 2021 for Insidious 5 is definitely feasible if filming begins in early 2021, but it is more likely that the horror film would be released sometime during the first half of 2022, according to the latest reports.
