What is Altered Carbon Season is All About?
The series begins over 360 years in the future, with the majority of the first season’s episodes taking place in the year 2384 in Bay City, a futuristic city. A person’s memories and awareness (referred to as digital human freight, or DHF) will be recorded on a disk-shaped device called a cortical stack that will be implanted in the vertebrae at the back of the neck in the future. These alien-designed storage devices have been reverse-engineered and mass-produced, however they can only be constructed from Harlan’s World material.
Sleeves are physical human or synthetic bodies, and stacks can be transferred to new bodies after death. However, if a person’s stack is destroyed and there is no backup, they can still be killed. Only the wealthiest, dubbed “Meths” after Methuselah, have the ability to change bodies via clones and remote storage of their consciousness in satellites, ensuring that they would never die of old age before being resleeved.
Akeshi Kovacs, a political operative with mercenary talents, is the last remaining Envoys soldier, a rebel organisation crushed in an insurrection against the new world government. In the first season, 250 years after the Envoys are destroyed, 300-year-old Meth Laurens Bancroft, one of the wealthiest men in the settled planets, frees his stack from prison. Bancroft promises him a second chance at life if he can solve a murder—his own. The second season is set 30 years after the first, in the early 2410s, when Kovacs, now in a new sleeve, continues his search for his lost love and Envoy commander Quellcrist Falconer.
Will There Be Altered Carbon Season 3
The second season of Altered Carbon has been available on Netflix for almost a year. The show’s cyberpunk premise and gripping content kept viewers on the tip of their seats, and they are eagerly expecting Season 3 of Altered Carbon. However, something quite opposite occurred. However, some die-hard fans of the show are still hoping to see what’s next for Takeshi Kovacs.
Viewers reacted favourably to both chapters of this cyberpunk drama. The addition of Anthony Mackie in the second season raised the sequel’s ratings even further. Despite this, Netflix cancelled the show just a few months after the second season was released. They decided to stop Takeshi Kovacs in the middle of his journey. According to the rumours, the coronavirus pandemic had no bearing on the cancellation of Altered Carbon Season 3.
Only a few months before this one was terminated, the streaming giant shelved several of its originals owing to the epidemic. On Rotten Tomatoes, Altered Carbon has an 85% approval rating. The show has a large and devoted fan base, and fans are still hoping for a third season. Netflix, despite everything, has not changed its mind.
The streaming behemoth has never publicly stated why Season 3 of Altered Carbon was terminated. However, Netflix’s viewership against the cost renewal review process was the primary reason for its cancellation. Cindy Holland, Netflix’s VP of original content, has outlined this approach on multiple occasions. The first thing they check at is whether or not they are attracting enough people to cover the cost of the broadcast. Cindy emphasised that they only invest after calculating the potential viewership.
The critical acclaim is vital, but if the series does not receive the desired viewership, they see no reason to continue it. Altered Carbon has a lot of special and visual effects, hence it’s quite expensive to make. As a result, Netflix could not see the value in investing more money and stretching when its cost was not supported by consumers.
