Starship Troopers is a 1997 American military science fiction action film directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Edward Neumeier, based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Robert A. Heinlein.
The plot revolves around Johnny Rico, a young soldier in the Mobile Infantry, a futuristic military unit. Rico's military career progresses from recruit to non-commissioned officer to officer, all while humanity and an insectoid species known as Arachnids wage an interstellar war.
The only film in the Starship Troopers franchise to be released theatrically, it received mostly negative reviews from critics upon its initial release; however, in retrospect, reviews have become more positive, with many critics highlighting the film's political satire.
It made $54.5 million in the United States and a total of $121.2 million worldwide, despite a budget of $105 million. At the 70th Academy Awards in 1998, the film was nominated for Best Visual Effects but lost to Titanic. The film was ranked #20 on Slant Magazine's list of “The 100 Best Films of the 1990s” in 2012.
Starship Troopers: Plot
The Federation, a militaristic, neo-fascist form of governance that grants its citizens additional benefits as “Citizens”—granted through military service—as opposed to “Civilians,” who do not—has governed humanity since the 23rd century as a space-faring, planet-colonizing race.
The humans come upon the Arachnids, an alien race opposed to the existence of humanity in the galaxy, after leaving the known solar system.

Particularly from main actor Casper Van Dien, the acting is lackluster. Denise Richards' portrayal of wannabe pilot Carmen Ibanez is likewise questionable. Clancy Brown and Michael Ironside, two dependable veterans, are the only actors that stand out.
But Starship Troopers is satire at its best, with Verhoeven deftly incorporating social commentary and jabs into the narrative.
How “Starship Troopers” Relates to the American Demise
In these recent decades of decadence, degradation, towering institutional brutality, and pervasive bad taste, it has become abundantly evident that American life is trapped inside the Paul Verhoeven film universe.
Verhoeven dealt with a particularly unattractive image of the future in the gory, satirical sci-fi movies that made him famous with American viewers. These films were both luridly inventive and careful about where not to be imaginative.
The 1987 film “RoboCop,” which takes place in a futuristic Detroit, is a gleeful exaggeration of the urban life anxieties of the Reagan era: the office towers are even more isolated, and their boardrooms are more brazenly sociopathic; popular culture is a tick or two more savage and leering; the police are more outgunned, and the streets are even more unruly.
