Yoshihiro Togashi's critically acclaimed anime and manga series “Hunter x Hunter” is well known for its intricate plotlines, complex characters, and emotional depth.
One of the most poignant moments in the series occurs with the tragic death of Komugi, the Gungi prodigy, in the Chimera Ant arc. Let's delve into the circumstances surrounding Komugi's demise and the emotional impact it had on both the characters and the audience.
Who is Komugi?
Komugi, a blind Gun-Gi player, made her first appearance in the Chimera Ant Arc. Komugi hailed from a family of twelve in the Republic of East Gorteau and was the country's representative for Gun-gi before becoming a professional player to support her family.
Komugi was one of Nen's rare geniuses who could utilize it without any prior training. However, she only used it on Gun-gi. She had set a lofty goal of never losing a game, even going so far as to threaten to commit suicide if she did.
When the Chimera Ant King, the new king of East Gorteau, summoned Komugi, she met her match. He claims to have practiced Gun-gi and is prepared to take on the national champion.
He does, however, lose every match against her. As the two continue to play without stopping, the King gradually transforms from a vicious monster to someone who recognizes humanity, thanks to Komugi.
How Did Komugi Die?
Komugi dies by Meruem's side after their final Gun-gi match. After defeating him in episode 126 of the Chimera Ant Arc, Netero poisoned Meruem. Following the struggle, Netero pierces Meruem's heart with the highly contagious miniature rose poison.
Komugi was recovering from being injured by Zeno's Dragon Drive during the combat between Meruem and Netero. During this period, she is kidnapped by Gon and placed under Killua's watch.
She was hidden from the king as he recovered from amnesia. The guards want the return of their previous king, who desired world dominance, rather than someone who spent his entire day playing Gun-gi. Meruem, on the other hand, remembers Komugi and requests for her so he might play against her in his final minutes.
