Season 5 of The Expanse has been full of surprises, but the Amazon sci-fi series saved the best for last.
The new season began broadcasting weekly on December 15th, 2020, and by February 2nd, the 10th and final episode had arrived.
However, the conclusion of The Expanse season 5, episode 10—particularly the fate of Alex—has left fans with many unanswered questions that must be addressed.
How Did Alex Kamal Die?
Alex Kamal, played by Cas Anvar, has been a major character on the program since season one.
Following his return to Mars, the character was extensively featured in Season 5, with his desire to reconnect with his estranged family.
The veteran navy pilot, who was a member of the Roci crew, is survived by his wife, Talissa, and son, Melas, who fear he is dead.
He reconnected with former Martian marine Bobbie Draper, who was still investigating the smuggling of Martian technology to the Belters.
However, due to circumstances regarding actor Cas, he will now be removed from the show. The show has yet to indicate how they would depict his departure.
What Happened in the Last Episode of The Expanse Season 5?
The final episode of season 5 of The Expanse, Nemesis Games, finds the Rocinante crew preparing for a battle with five belter ships headed by Camina Drummer.
Despite the fact that the operation is almost suicidal, Holden and the Roci crew prepare to launch an attack despite being vastly outnumbered.
This is to give Alex and Bobbie enough time to rescue Naomi, who is stranded aboard the ailing Chetzemoka.
While the Roci is engaged in combat with Drummer's ships, Alex performs a hazardous high-G maneuver to allow Bobbie to carry Naomi onboard after she bailed out of the Chetzemoka.
However, after disregarding warnings about conducting the perilous maneuver, Alex is clearly mistaken when Bobbie returns Naomi to the ship.
The Roci, which survived the combat after Drummer's ships began firing at one another in a betrayal, docks with the Razorback, and we hear that Alex has died. More on that later.
After learning of Drummer's failure to destroy the Roci, Marco Inaros becomes enraged and suffocates Serge Kylo, one of Drummer's family members, in an airlock. Several of Drummer's crewmates flee, knowing their lives are in danger.
Meanwhile, the entire Roci crew is reunited on Luna, and for a brief time, all is peaceful, as Chrisjen Avasalara, the newly nominated candidate for UN Secretary-General, delivers a stirring address.
The respite does not last long, as those on Luna immediately learn that Marco Inaros' Belter fleet, aided by Admiral Sauveterre's Martian fleet, attacks the Sol Ring and the ships guarding it.

The episode concludes with the news that Inaros has paid off Sauveterre's Martian fleet with a sample of the protomolecule, which we can see being utilized on the planet of Laconia via the Sol Ring.
As the credits roll, the Martian fleet moves through the Ring, leaving the solar system in chaos as a result of these latest occurrences.
