“House of the Dragon” fans might not have expected the kiss between Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno), but Mizuno certainly did. In the July 21 episode titled “Smallfolk,” Rhaenyra and Mysaria shared an emotional moment during a private meeting.
After Mysaria opened up about her painful past, Rhaenyra ran over to her and hugged her. This closeness turned into a passionate kiss, which was interrupted only when one of Rhaenyra’s Queensguards walked in. Mizuno spoke with TV Insider about this surprising kiss, why this romance was a possibility from the start, and how she thinks Daemon (Matt Smith) will react to it.
How Long Did You Foresee Mysaria and Rhaenyra’s Relationship Reaching This Turning Point?
Sonoya Mizuno: When I got the job and spoke to the showrunners, they mentioned that there was a possibility of romance between Mysaria and Rhaenyra. I knew about it before we started Season 1. When we got the scripts for Season 2, I remember the end of the episode said, “Their foreheads are touching. There’s just breath between them. And then what happens next is interrupted.” It didn’t specify what happened, and we had many discussions about it during pre-production and production. Both Emma and I were determined not to make it feel like queer-baiting, so we worked to ensure it was handled authentically. It was a collaborative decision to take the story in this direction.”
Did Mysaria Harbor Romantic Feelings for Rhaenyra Prior to Their Kiss?
Looking back, you might realize, “Yes, I was attracted to that person for a long time,” and see that they were always on your mind. There's definitely something significant happening there. Mysaria might not have anticipated the kiss at the end of the episode, but she does hold a deep admiration for Rhaenyra. Rhaenyra is not just physically attractive but also as a person and what she represents. It’s hard not to be drawn to that. However, it’s not that Mysaria has a simple crush.
In a previous episode, when Mysaria and Rhaenyra discussed Seasmoke, Mysaria noticed his loneliness, and Rhaenyra’s expression revealed a similar sense of isolation. Both Mysaria and Rhaenyra have experienced loneliness.
