Candy is a 2006 Australian romantic drama film based on Luke Davies' novel Candy: A Novel of Love and Addiction, which was published in 1998. Candy stars Heath Ledger, Abbie Cornish, and Geoffrey Rush and is directed by Neil Armfield, a first-time director.
Margaret Fink's film Candy was first released in Australia on May 25, 2006, and was then released worldwide.
Plot of Candy
Dan (Heath Ledger) is a poet who falls in love with Candy (Abbie Cornish), an art student who is drawn to his bohemian lifestyle – and his addiction to heroin. Their relationship is alternating stages of forgetfulness, self-destruction, and misery, since they are as much hooked on one other as they are on the drug.
The film is divided into three acts, each with about three sequences, and is titled Heaven, Earth, and Hell. The youthful couples in Heaven are ecstatically experiencing sex and drugs. They borrow money from Candy's parents or eccentric university lecturer Casper (Geoffrey Rush), and they sell stuff, steal, and even prostitute when they're desperate.
They are married on Earth and must deal with the difficulties of addiction and family life. Candy becomes a prostitute when Dan buys the drugs. Dan takes a credit card and obtains the cardholder's PIN before stealing money from his bank account. Candy becomes pregnant, but the baby is stillborn at 23 weeks, despite their best attempts to “go clean.” They ultimately stop taking drugs after a great deal of work and severe withdrawal symptoms. Despite their terrible living conditions, continual financial problems, and many disagreements, they adore one other.
They go through the disintegration and recovery of their romance in Hell. They chose to go to the country in order to “try methadone” as a means of reintegrating into society. Candy clashes with her parents, breaks down, and yells for them to leave after a horrible Sunday brunch. She eventually falls in love with a neighbour who is also a drug addict and returns to her former way of life. She has a total mental breakdown and drifts away from Dan.
He glances up Casper once more, returning to his wayward father and immediately reverting to his trademark “yellow jesus.” Dan learns about Candy's hospitalisation the next morning in Sydney, when he finds her in an unconscious, semi-catatonic state. Dan arrives home to discover Casper has died of a heroin overdose, forcing him to rethink his life. Dan cleans up and obtains a dishwashing job while Candy heals at a clinic. When Candy sees Dan again, he says “There is no turning back now. If you get a reprieve, I believe it's important to realise how frail you are “She then gets up and walks away.
