Have you Watched The Prom Movie Yet?

Ryan Murphy knew he wanted to adapt The Prom into a film under his Netflix agreement when he saw it on Broadway in January 2019. The musical follows four semi-retired Broadway actors as they look for a cause to support as celebrity campaigners in the hopes of boosting their sagging careers.

They targeted Edgewater, Indiana, a conservative community where a high school senior named Emma was informed she couldn't bring her lover to the prom. The production was “one of the most uplifting, sincere, and special musicals” Murphy has ever seen on Broadway, according to Murphy.

The film adaptation, directed by Murphy and set to premiere on Netflix on Dec. 11, stays close to the source material. When their production, a musical about Eleanor Roosevelt, closes on opening night, Broadway vets Dee Dee Allen (Meryl Streep) and Barry Glickman (James Corden) are confronted with their darkest nightmares.

What's there in the movie “The Prom”?

At a meeting of the James Madison High School PTA in Edgewater, Indiana, PTA president Mrs. Greene announces that the school's prom will be cancelled because a student named Emma Nolan wanted to bring a girl to the dance, much to the chagrin of Principal Tom Hawkins, who supports Emma but is powerless to stop the PTA.

Meanwhile, egotistical Broadway stars Dee Dee Allen and Barry Glickman are dissatisfied with their show Eleanor! in New York City. Due to the New York Times slamming their performances, The Eleanor Roosevelt Story closed on opening night. Trent Oliver, a Juilliard graduate and former comedy star who has been reduced to performing meaningless supporting roles, and Angie Dickinson, a narcissistic actress who has recently abandoned her position in the chorus of Chicago after Tina Louise was passed over for the role of Roxie Hart.

Angie and Trent see that the four of them require a cause in order to resurrect their careers. The actors travel to Indiana with the cast of Godspell and publicist Sheldon Saperstein after seeing Emma's tale on Twitter.
Emma is ridiculed and humiliated at school by her classmates Kaylee, Shelby, Nick, and Kevin, who accuse her of spoiling prom. The players burst into the next PTA meeting, hoping to raise support for Emma but failing miserably. Hawkins turns out to be a Dee Dee fanatic. Alyssa, Emma's closeted girlfriend/Mrs. Greene's daughter, meets in private with Emma to decide when Alyssa should tell her mother.
