Handmaid’s Tale Season 4: Release Date-Everything You Need To Know!

The Handmaid's Tale is returning after a two-year hiatus. The fourth season of the dystopian drama returns to Hulu on Wednesday, April 28, with the first three episodes premiering concurrently.

According to creator Bruce Miller, the show's fourth season, shot almost entirely during the COVID-19 pandemic, is the most ambitious yet. Unlike previous seasons, which were primarily based in Boston, this one will travel throughout Gilead, including to the war front in Chicago.

“We're following June's passion, drive, and relentless pursuit of change, and it's taking us everywhere,” Miller explained. The show will also be set in Canada, where Commander Fred (Joseph Fiennes) and Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) were apprehended in the season three finale in 2019.

June's journey began with the goal of regaining individual freedom and reuniting with her family, but her priorities have shifted. She now wishes to destabilize the entire state. According to Hulu's official synopsis, as she adopts a rebel persona, things will become (unsurprisingly) dangerous for her.

“Her risks bring unexpected and dangerous new challenges, and her desire for justice and vengeance threatens to consume her and destroy her most cherished relationships.”Here's what to expect from the fourth season of the show.

Who Will Be in the Cast?

Hulu has confirmed that Moss, Dowd, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley, Alexis Bledel, Max Minghella, Madeline Brewer, O-T Fagbenle, Amanda Brugel, and Bradley Whitford will all be back.

Sam Jaeger, who plays US Representative Mark Tuello, will join the cast as a series regular. According to Deadline, the most recent addition is 14-year-old Mckenna Grace. She'll play a “confident” and “rebellious” adolescent bride of a Commander much older than her.

Handmaid's Tale Season 4: Plot

The Handmaid's Tale, based on Margaret Atwood's novel of the same name, is set in a dystopian version of the United States and revolves around Gilead, a totalitarian society in which women are forced to become “handmaids” and bear children for its leaders.

June (Elisabeth Moss) helped a group of children escape Gilead by plane at the end of season three, but she was seriously injured. She was carried away by her fellow handmaids at the end of the final episode.

Serena Joy also duped her husband, Fred Waterford, into going to Canada to face war crimes charges, but in response, he exposed her evil deeds (and, in the process, revealed that Nichole isn't his biological daughter; her real father is Nick).

According to the trailer, season four will continue to follow the rising resistance in Gilead while delving into the Waterfords' devastating fallout. Fans should not expect June's story to end with the upcoming series, as the show will return for a fifth season, casting doubt on whether June will make it out of Gilead and into the safe territory of Canada.

The show's star, Elisabeth Moss, recently hinted at June's eventual escape, telling The Times that the dystopian drama “can't keep June in this place where she's tortured all the time,” adding, “It's boring.”Season four isn't looking good for Aunt Lydia, with the state of Gilead being turned upside down by June's revolutionary efforts (Ann Dowd).

Lydia has “a lot to prove,” according to Ann Dowd on This Morning. “The Commanders can't wait to blame anyone but themselves, and Lydia, of course, is front and center to receive that blame, which I'm sure she blames herself,” she explained.

“How could she have overlooked this? She could see that the girls were acting strangely. June was up to something, and no, I did not intervene. So, yes, I believe she has a lot to prove.”Bruce Miller, the series creator, also hinted at a potentially unhappy ending for heroine June.

In an interview with TV Guide, he stated: “Everyone in Toronto is demonstrating what June will face if she ever escapes. You're telling stories about possible routes for June, but it won't all be sunshine and lollipops.

“We are following June, and June lives in Gilead, which is not a pleasant place. And it will remain an unpleasant environment. And we try to be as realistic as possible about what might happen and how things work.”

It also appears that June's husband, Luke (O-T Fagbenle), will seek vengeance on his wife's rapist, Fred Waterford. “Oh, I think his hope is increasing,” the actor said of his character to Express. I believe there are more cracks in Gilead's wall than ever.”

“And he's ready to smash through that — if he could muster a way,” he later added. In an interview with TV Line, Whitford also hinted that he had no idea which side his character would “land” on.

“Lawrence is conflicted, and I believe this is due to Eleanor, his wife — and Julie Dretzin, by the way, was just, like, absolutely perfect… I'm not sure where he's going to land. I honestly don't know. I'm not trying to be cute, and I have a feeling Bruce isn't sure either, which only adds to June's terror.”

Will Season 4 of the Handmaid's Tale Be the Last?

At the Television Critics Association press tour, The Handmaid's Tale executive producer Warren Littlefield hinted there could be several more seasons. The fifth season has already been set.

“We haven't planned for season four to be the last one,” he told TV Guide, “but we know from Margaret Atwood's book The Testaments that it goes 15 years into the future.”

“We don't plan to end it in Season 4, and I can tell you that we don't have a clear way out. But I think we should keep the bar high. It wouldn't be bad to leave the audience wanting more, and then we could move on to The Testaments.”

When Will the Handmaid's Tale Season 4 Start?

According to Wikipedia, on April 27, 2021, at midnight ET, the first three episodes of season 4 will be available on Hulu. This is the same time that new episodes from previous seasons come out. Moss will direct her first episode of the show, “The Crossing,” which is the third one.
