Gunna was born in the Georgia city of College Park. His mother was the primary caregiver throughout his upbringing, and he has four elder brothers.

Gunna received their education at Langston Hughes High School as well as North Springs Charter School of Arts and Sciences. Under the alias Yung Serg, Gunna distributed the mixtape titled Hard Body in the year 2013.
