Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 has already had a bumpier road to make it to the big screen than imagined. However, we, Marvel fans, can rest assured that it's still coming and has a release date.
Sure, the release date isn't until May 2023. Still, with all of the behind-the-scenes turmoil surrounding writer/director James Gunn's dismissal and rehiring, it's at least confirmed to be part of Phase 4.
Gunn has already been promoting the arrival of the threequel, claiming that it would be “massive” in terms of the planets that will be shown, as well as confirming that the soundtrack and script are complete. Everything is set for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 to bring the trilogy to a thrilling finish, so here's everything you need to know.
Guardians of Galaxy Vol. 3 Overview
Marvel Studios announced a third Guardians of the Galaxy film in April 2016, with James Gunn returning to further write and direct a year later. After the emergence of controversial tweets, Disney dismissed him in July 2018, then changed course in October and rehired him as director. Gunn's comeback, as well as the involvement of the five major stars, was announced in early 2019, with production set to begin once Gunn finishes his film The Suicide Squad (2021) and its spin-off series Peacemaker (2022).
At the San Diego Comic-Con in July 2019, Feige revealed that the film was in the works. Shooting is all set to start in Atlanta in November 2021, with a projected completion date of April 2022. The third instalment of the Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy franchise will be released on May 5, 2023.
The events of Thor: Love and Thunder and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special are continued in the Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3. (2022).
Guardians of Galaxy Vol. 3 Release Date
Marvel has now announced that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will be released on May 5, 2023, so you can start counting down the days.
Both Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista have stated that production in Atlanta would begin in November and last around six months. According to Gunn, the production will also involve filming for the forthcoming Holiday Special.
“I'm planning to film it at the same time as Guardians of the Galaxy 3. As a result, we're employing a few of the same sets. I believe it will be a fantastic Christmas special.” He reinforced my suspicions.
Guardians of Galaxy Vol. 3 Cast
Chris Pratt will once again reprise his role as Star-Lord. At the same time, Dave Bautista will play Drax, Karen Gillan will play Nebula, Bradley Cooper will play Rocket, Vin Diesel will play Groot, and Pom Klementieff will play Mantis. After the events of Avengers: Endgame, we'll see Zoe Saldana reprise her role as Gamora.
We believed Gamora was dead after Avengers: Infinity War, but Endgame revealed a Gamora from another timeline in 2014, who was transported to 2023 and disappeared after Tony Stark saved the day. Saldana has shown interest in “exploring a terrible Gamora” in the third Guardians film, and we're all for it.
Guardians of Galaxy Vol. 3 Plot and Storyline
For the time being, narrative specifics for the third film are being kept under wraps, but Gunn has vowed that it would be the “epic finale” to the storey he began with Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014.
The movie will also mark the end of the present incarnation of the team on screen, with Bautista ruling out a return as Drax in the future. He told us, “I mean, as far as my commitments go, I've got Guardians 3, and that's probably going to be the last of Drax.”
In future instalments, Bautista said that another actor might portray Drax. Still, for Gunn, Bautista is Drax, and no one else can be.
Following Endgame, it appears that the third film will focus on the quest for Gamora, who vanished after the great battle with Thanos.
Gunn has stated that if he didn't get to make the third film, he would be devastated at not being able to complete Rocket's storey. So anticipate more from Rocket in the third film, maybe even his entire background.
“It's a deeper tale, so it's an emotional journey to go through,” he teased, adding that the third film is “quite difficult actually.”
