Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital will remain operating for at least one more season, so don't worry, Grey's Anatomy fans! An unexpected revelation during the series' Season 18 winter holiday in January 2022.
ABC reported that star Ellen Pompeo and showrunner Krista Vernoff had negotiated new deals for Season 19, putting to rest fears that the medical drama would ultimately reach its finale in 2022.
Vernoff said, “I'm delighted to work with our outstanding writers to conjure up where we go from here, and I'm always thankful to our partners at Disney and ABC for enabling us to make bold tales with genuine impact.”
Creator Shonda Rhimes, who handed the reins of the program over to Vernoff in Season 14, said of the renewal news, “I couldn't be more excited that we get to keep telling the tales of Meredith, Bailey, Richard, and all of the other doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial for another season.
This is a real credit to Krista, the actors, the crew, and all the writers that keep the audience on the edge of their seat week after week. And it would not be possible without the generations of great fans who have supported Grey's Anatomy for so many years.”
The upcoming Season 19 of Grey's Anatomy will reveal what awaits Meredith and the rest of the Grey Sloan doctors. This page contains all of the information regarding Grey's Anatomy Season 19.
What Will the Plot of Grey's Anatomy Season 19 Be About?
- “Through the eyes of beloved returning and new characters, Grey's Anatomy will examine the ever-expanding world of modern medicine,” according to the network, in Season 19 of the show.
- This is true for every show season, so that vague statement doesn't tell us what we can expect this season.
- That's understandable, given that Season 18 is still in progress. If history indicates, the show will have several surprises up its sleeve before Season 19 premieres in the fall of 2019.
- Although we can't be sure, we may speculate that similar to Season 18, Season 19 of Grey's Anatomy will take place in a fictional post-COVID universe. After focusing heavily on the coronavirus pandemic for Season 17.
Grey's Anatomy decided to diverge from our current reality for Season 18, airing a disclaimer with each episode that reads, “This season, Grey's Anatomy depicts a fictional, post-pandemic world that represents our hopes for the future.” The epidemic is still doing havoc on the medical profession.”
Which Grey's Anatomy Cast Members Will Be Returning for Season 19 of the Show?
According to current expectations, in addition to Pompeo, who portrays Dr. Meredith Grey, original cast members Chandra Wilson (Dr. Miranda Bailey) and James Pickens Jr. (Dr. Richard Webber) are also likely to return for Season 19 following the signing of new multi-year contracts in May 2019.
Kim Raver (Dr. Teddy Altman), Camilla Luddington (Dr. Jo Wilson), and Kevin McKidd (Dr. Owen Hunt) signed three-year contracts in 2019 that would keep them on the show until the end of Season 19.
Nevertheless, there is no assurance that the characters in Grey's Anatomy will live that long.
The show is well-known for writing off characters who still have time remaining on their actors' contracts.
Because Owen's fate is still up in the air following the mid-season finale of Season 18, it is unclear whether McKidd will return for Season 19.
The rest of the Season 18 cast has yet to be confirmed, although it's safe to presume that most of them will return for Season 19.
Kelly McCreary played Dr. Maggie Pierce, Caterina Scorsone played Dr. Amelia Shepherd, Jake Borelli played Dr. Levi Schmitt, Chris Carmack played Dr. Atticus Lincoln, Richard Flood played Dr. Cormac Hayes, Anthony Hill played Dr. Winston Ndugo, and Scott Speedman played Dr. Nick Marsh, among other series regulars.
When Will the 19th Season of Grey's Anatomy Premiere?
Although we do not yet have a specific premiere date for Grey's Anatomy Season 19, new seasons of the show normally premiere in the fall, so it is reasonable to guess that the next season will premiere sometime in the fall of 2022.
Grey's Anatomy Season 19 premiere date has not yet been announced.
Will Grey's Anatomy's Season 19 Be the Series' Final Season?
Grey's Anatomy has been the subject of rampant speculation for years, with each new season possibly being the show's final season.
However, ABC has consistently stated that the show will continue to air new episodes as long as its creative team is willing to produce them.
On the other hand, Pompeo appears to be nearing the end of her readiness to continue portraying the character she has been performing since 2005.
According to her interview in December 2021, “I've been trying to concentrate on convincing everyone that it should come to an end.”
However, it appears that the individuals with whom she is speaking are not supportive of her desire to bring the series to a close.
It's as if I'm the naive one who keeps saying things like, ‘But what's the tale, what story are we going to tell?' In the end, everyone thinks, ‘Who cares, Ellen?'” It generates a gazillion dollars in revenue.”
So, while Season 19 may be the final season in which we see Meredith, we wouldn't advise placing your bets on it just yet. Regarding Grey's Anatomy, we've learned that you should never write Meredith Grey off too soon.
How Did Things Turn Out in Season 18 of Grey's Anatomy?
Given that Season 18 is still in progress, we have no way we can not know who the other characters will be by the season's conclusion.
At the halfway point of Season 18, Meredith is traveling to Minnesota to work on a new surgical therapy for Parkinson's illness, funded by renowned neurosurgeon David Hamilton; Helloo is a guest star on the show (Peter Gallagher).
Dr. Kai Bartley, a new character, and her sister (in-law) Amelia (Scorsone) have all lent their support to her in her endeavors (E.R. Fightmaster). Meredith has also been seeing Nick, a transplant surgeon she met in Minnesota.
Meanwhile, Miranda and Richard have been improving the intern training program at Seattle's Harborview Medical Center by using the “Webber Method,” which gives surgical residents greater autonomy and independence during surgical procedures.
The mid-season finale revealed that Levi and Taryn became overconfident when performing a procedure alone in the operating room, ultimately resulting in their patient's death.
In addition to these and other storylines, Season 18 has seen the heartbreaking breakup of Amelia and Link following the birth of their son, Dr. Jo's specialization switch to obstetrics, and Owen's efforts to provide medical care (and, as we learn in the Season 18 mid-season finale, physician-assisted suicide in some instances) to veterans suffering from chronic health issues.
After taking Teddy to safety and entrusting Cormac with his secret about the veterans, Owen was forced to drive down a precipice in a wrecked automobile in the mid-season finale of Grey's Anatomy.
As a result, the outcome of that storyline will most likely be determined by Owen's survival after the fall.
