As Texas' 50th attorney general and a member of the Texas Supreme Court from 1996 to 2001, this Republican represented the state in both capacities between 2002 and 2015. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has been re-elected in both 2014 and 2018.
Since the Reconstruction era, Abbott was Texas' third Republican attorney general. As the longest-serving Texas attorney general, he was elected in 2002, 2006, and 2010 with 57% of the vote, making him the longest-serving Texas attorney general in state history.
In 1995, then-governor George W. Bush named Abbott to the Texas Supreme Court, where he served until his appointment as attorney general in 2013.
In 1998, Abbott received 60% of the vote and was re-elected to a second term. While serving as attorney general, he successfully argued for the exhibition of the Ten Commandments in Texas' State Capitol and failed to defend the state's prohibition on gay marriage in the 2005 US Supreme Court decision Van Orden v. Perry.

Abbot was born in Wichita Falls on November 13, 1957, to parents of English heritage. Citation needed The father of Calvin Abbott, Calvin Rodger Abbott, was a stockbroker and insurance agent.

For three years, Abbott served as a state trial judge in Houston's 129th District Court, where he presided over a variety of civil cases.
In 1996, then-Governor George W. Bush named Abbott to the Texas Supreme Court; he was re-elected to the court in 1998 for a two-year term (six-year term). John B. Hawley, a Libertarian from Dallas, was the only Democrat to challenge Abbott in 1996.
By a margin of 84% to 16%, Abbott beat Hawley. Abbott beat Democratic challenger David Van Os by a 60-40 margin in 1998.
In 2001, Abbott returned to private practice with Bracewell & Giuliani LLC after leaving the Supreme Court.
