David Lowery wrote, edited, produced, and directed a 2021 American epic mediaeval fantasy film. Gawain, a newly-appointed knight from King Arthur's Round Table, sets off on a trip to test his courage and meet the Green Knight, played by Dev Patel.
The picture, which is based on the 14th-century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, also stars Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Sarita Choudhury, Sean Harris, and Ralph Ineson.
Lowery has turned Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, a 14th-century chivalric tale, into one of the year's most memorable pictures, a fascinating swirl of masculinity, temptation, heroism, and faith.
What is Green Knight all about?
Gawain, King Arthur's nephew, wakes up at a brothel on Christmas Day after spending the night with his sweetheart Essel. After being chastised by his mother for his behaviour, he returns to Camelot and travels to King Arthur's court for a feast. Arthur bestows the prince's throne to Gawain and expresses remorse for not getting to know him better.
Gawain's mother performs an unknown ritual in an isolated tower; shortly after, an intimidating spirit known as the Green Knight barges in and challenges Arthur's court to a “game”;
if anyone can land a blow on him, they will win his axe; however, they must return to the Green Chapel the following Christmas and receive an equal wound in return.
Gawain drowns his anxieties in sex and booze for the following year. Then, when Christmas comes around again, Arthur meets Gawain and demands that he keep his word. Gawain reluctantly accepts and sets off towards the Green Chapel, carrying the Green Knight's axe and a green girdle crafted by his mother's coven, which promises him no harm as long as he wears it.
The Green Knight was released with Jungle Cruise and Stillwater in the United States and Canada, and it is expected to make approximately $4 million in its first weekend from 2,790 cinemas. The picture grossed $2.9 million on its opening day, including $750,000 from Thursday night screenings.

Let’s See Some Reviews on Rotten Tomatoes
Lowery's picture is a basic game of truth AND dare, despite all the gushing cinematic pomp and ceremony. I'd prefer not to participate, but I'll watch.- Jeff Mitchell Art House Film Wire
The multi-cultural casting, like Peter Brook's stage and cinema adaptations of the [Mahabharata], goes hand in hand with the global themes of the narrative- Rubin Safaya Cinemalogue
The film received a 2.5 out of 4-star rating from Slant Magazine, who described it as “A self-consciously revisionist take on Camelot lore,”.
And wrote that it “smooths out the enduring mysteries, opaque psychology, and narrative idiosyncrasies of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, resulting in a work that's only superficially more daring and enigmatic than its source material.”
