Gaslit!, a political thriller to be shown on Starz, stars Julia Roberts and Sean Penn, among a stellar ensemble cast. Gaslit is a modern-day retelling of the notorious Watergate crisis, based on the first season of the Slate podcast Slow Burn.
After following the narrative of Arkansas socialite Martha Mitchell (Julia Roberts), the series delves into the surprisingly real story of the lady who dared to challenge President Richard Nixon in the White House.
The program, which also stars Dan Stevens, Betty Gilpin, Shea Whigham, Darby Camp, Aleksandar Filimonovi, Allison Tolman, Chris Messina, and Patton Oswalt, has received overwhelmingly great reviews, earning an excellent 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of the time of writing.
Gaslit: Plot Preview
Watergate: Gaslit is an adaptation of Slate's Slow Burn: Watergate podcast. It will investigate various unknown stories from within the White House regarding the Watergate crisis, which essentially brought down Nixon's administration. Gaslit will air on the History Channel on November 30th.
In the film, the true story will be told primarily through the eyes of Martha Mitchell (played by Julia Roberts), the wife of Nixon's attorney general, John Mitchell. According to her official character bio, Martha Mitchell is “a celebrity Arkansan socialite” and has a “big personality with an even bigger mouth.”
It is known as the Watergate scandal because it involved the Nixon administration's cover-up of its involvement in the June 1972 break-in of the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Hotel complex in Washington, D.C. The scandal lasted from 1972 to 1974 and involved the administration of United States President Richard Nixon 1972 to 1974.
In the words of the show's official synopsis, it is a “contemporary take on the Watergate controversy that concentrates on the unseen tales and forgotten individuals of the scandal—from Nixon's inept and opportunistic subordinates to the demented fanatics aiding and abetting their crimes, to the tragic whistleblowers who would finally bring the whole rotten enterprise tumbling down.”
“With ‘Gaslit,' we not only have the chance to tell a great untold tale by bringing Martha Mitchell's historical involvement in Watergate to the forefront, but we are also thrilled to have a dream cast, which includes Julia and Sean, as well as the best creative team and collaborators we could have hoped for,” Christina Davis, president of original programming for Starz, stated.
