Gary Rossington Cause of Death: Last Founding Member of Lynyrd Skynyrd Dies at 71!

Gary Rossington, the guitarist for the band Lynyrd Skynyrd, passed away on Sunday. He was 71. Through Fox News Digital, the band's representative announced Rossington's passing.

“It is with our deepest sympathy and sadness that we have to advise, that we lost our brother, friend, family member, songwriter and guitarist, Gary Rossington, today,” the band said online.

As usual, “Gary is now with his Skynyrd brothers and relatives in paradise and playing it pretty.” The post asked for prayers for Dale, Mary, Annie, and the rest of the Rossington family, as well as for privacy during this trying time.

What was Gary Rossington Cause of Death?

His cause of death has not yet been revealed. In 2019, the “Free Bird” singer required immediate heart surgery. Rossington had a heart attack in 2015 and underwent surgery for his condition.

Gary was one of over a dozen people on board a plane that crashed in Mississippi in October 1977, saving their lives while the band's lead vocalist, Ronnie Van Zant, and his siblings, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines, and three others, perished.

Throughout the course of five decades, Gary Rossington was a mainstay of Lynyrd Skynyrd's live shows. Gary came back to the band when Ronnie's brother, Johnny Van Zant, reunited them ten years after the incident. Gary Rossington survived the plane catastrophe that killed Ronnie Van Zant and five others in 1977.
