Future Australian post-apocalyptic action adventure movie Furiosa, which stars Anya Taylor-Joy as the title character Furiosa, is directed and co-written by George Miller.
In addition to being a sequel and prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, it was released in 2015. Other Fury Road alumni include costume designer Jenny Beavan, composer Junkie XL, film editor Margaret Sixel, screenwriter Nico Lathouris, and Margaret Sixel.
It will be the fifth installment in the Mad Max series and is expected to center on Furiosa's beginnings.
Furiosa Release Date
It was announced in September that “Furiosa” would be delayed by nearly a year, with a release date of May 24, 2024.
Delays are likely as a result of the pandemic, with Hemsworth's Netflix film “Extraction 2” being pulled out of Australia — which had been placed on lockdown due to rising cases — in order to keep production on track.
Filming on “Furiosa” was scheduled to begin in early 2022, but no further updates have been provided.
Miller also wanted to start working on the film after finishing his upcoming epic romance “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” starring Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba, which is set to be released on Aug. 31.
It's also possible that the film's massive scope — which will cover several years of Furiosa's life — influenced its timeline.
Former New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian predicted that “Furiosa” would be Australia's biggest film ever, generating $350 million for the local economy.
In addition, Nathan Jones will reprise his role as Immortan Joe's youngest son Rictus Erectus in “Fury Road.”
Jodie Comer and Richard Madden were once considered for lead roles. The film will also include a younger Immortan Joe, the identity of whom has yet to be revealed.
Miller originally planned to use CG de-aging technology so that Theron could reprise her role in “Furiosa” in a way that made sense.
He eventually decided against it, citing the fact that VFX technology has yet to be perfected.
Warner Bros. has provided us with the official plot synopsis. It says:
“As the world fell apart, young Furiosa is kidnapped from the Green Place of Many Mothers and enslaved by a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementias.”
Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across The Immortan Joe's Citadel.
“While the two Tyrants battle for dominance, Furiosa must endure many trials as she assembles the means to return home.”
When Will Furiosa Be Released?
“Furiosa” was announced in 2020 and was originally scheduled to hit theatres in the summer of 2023. The film's release date has since been pushed back to May 7, 2024. (via IndieWire). If the release date for the prequel is confirmed, it will be nine years after Furiosa's debut in “Mad Max: Fury Road.”
