Forspoken: Release Date, Trailer, and More!

Forspoken (previously known as ‘Project Athia') is an upcoming action role-playing game from Square Enix that will be released exclusively on PlayStation 5 and PC in May 2022.

Players will assume the role of Frey Holland (played by Charlie's Angels' Ella Balinska), a young New Yorker who must harness her newfound magical powers in order to survive what Square Enix describes as a “thrilling, otherworldly adventure” as she attempts to make her way back home from the beautiful – but cruel – land of Athia, where she has been transported. Forspoken was first announced at Sony's PS5 games reveal in 2020, and players will

From what we've seen so far, Forspoken looks absolutely stunning, which comes as no surprise considering the game is being developed to take advantage of the PS5's technological capabilities. In other words, you can expect ray tracing as well as a seamless open world to explore, as well as some interesting applications for the DualSense controller.

Forspoken: Release Date

Forspoken will be released on May 24, 2022, for the PlayStation 5 and the PC, making it a PlayStation 5 console exclusive at the time of release.

However, this does not rule out the possibility of Forspoken arriving on Xbox at a later date. Forspoken (or, as it was known at the time, ‘Project Athia') is featured prominently in a trailer posted by the PlayStation YouTube account in December 2020, which shows footage from a collection of PS5 games and includes a tagline stating that the game will not be available on other consoles for at least 24 months after its release date.

As a result, it appears that Forspoken will be a limited-time PlayStation 5 console exclusive, though it won't be available on Xbox Series X until at least May 2024.

While a Forspoken release on Xbox is not ruled out, we do not anticipate a Forspoken release on the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, as the game is being developed to take advantage of current-generation hardware.

Is there a trailer?

An all-new trailer for Forspoken was unveiled at The Game Awards 2021 in Los Angeles. More of the game's story and action-packed gameplay is shown in the latest trailer, which also includes the game's release date of May 24, 2022.

Forspoken: Story and Gameplay

To play the role of Frey, a young New Yorker who is transported to the beautiful but cruel land of Athia, players will have to put themselves in his or her shoes. It will be up to Frey to use and hone her newly discovered magical abilities in order to navigate vast landscapes and battle monstrous creatures in order to find her way home.

Although there are few details about Forspoken's gameplay available at this time, we have been able to glean some information from the trailers we've seen so far and from what Square Enix has stated about the game.

Frey, the protagonist of Forspoken, will be able to use magic, as evidenced by the game's trailers (and its presentation at the Tokyo Game Show). The game's co-director Takefumi Terada has stated that Frey's learning to use “a wide variety of spells” will be a significant part of the story.

As the trailers have hinted, magic will also play an important role in the game's combat and traversal mechanics. Luminous Productions' style of development, according to Terada, “captures what makes our style of development at Luminous so special.” Players will be able to use magic to directly attack enemies or set traps for them as well as engage in “magic parkour,” traversing vast distances throughout Athia.

Terada has also stated that they want as many people as possible to be able to enjoy the game, so the controls aren't expected to be particularly complicated. Using magic to attack or use parkour skills will only require the pressing of a single button, whereas different button combinations will allow for different types of magic to be utilized.

According to Raio Mitsuno, the creative producer of Frey Holland, she is a “smart but still slightly immature” 20-year-old woman living in New York who, having grown up in a difficult environment, “doesn't trust the world much” and uses sarcasm and humor to distract herself from her own vulnerability. He described her as “a good person at heart” who is desperate to get to New York as “a good person at heart.” The mysterious world of Athia is revealed to Frey at this point, and he is transported there. Frey's arrival triggers a chain of events that leads to the beginning of the game's main story, which follows her journey as she attempts to find a way back home while also learning to wield magic.

In the trailer, we also got a glimpse of a talking bracelet, which turns out to be called Cuff, according to the cast. Cuff is another character in the game, and while Mitsuno has stated that we will not learn much about them until later in the game, Cuff will be important to the game and the story, as he will be guiding Frey through the game's story. Frey and Cuff have been referred to as “two peas in a pod,” with both saying “whatever they think” about everything. Consequently, they are “constantly bickering” and will engage in light conversation throughout Frey's journey.

With regard to the continent of Athia itself, it was a continent that was once at peace but is now on the verge of being destroyed, ruled by figures known as the Tantas who were once beloved but have now turned into oppressors. So far, only two Tantas have been confirmed. Tanta Sila is one of them. She is in charge of Athia's defense, and she is described as someone who “lives for the battlefield” and possesses “incredible physical strength.” On the other hand, Tanta Prav, the “Tanta of Justice,” is described as “a callous executioner with a warped sense of justice, who puts her faith solely in her own judgment.” Each of the Tantas has been created “with a specific virtue in mind,” and Frey will have to contend with them throughout the course of her journey.
