The tragic details of her late husband's death were disclosed by Amanda Thorpe, the wife of former England cricket player Graham Thorpe.
Amanda stated in an interview with The Times in the United Kingdom that her husband took his own life last week following years of suffering from “major depression and anxiety.”
The England and Wales Cricket Board declared the death of Graham on Monday, August 5. Graham played on the field for England from 1993 to 2005. His age was fifty-five.
We are heartbroken that he followed through on his belief and ended his life because he was so sick recently and felt that we would be better off without him, according to Amanda.
Graham's attempted suicide in May 2022, which “resulted in a prolonged stay in an intensive care unit,” was further described by Amanda.
She went on, “He continued to suffer from depression and anxiety, which at times got very severe, despite glimpses of hope and of the old Graham.” “He tried a lot of different treatments, but sadly none of them really seemed to work. We supported him as a family.”
Even though her late husband was known for being “mentally strong on the field,” Amanda exploited his passing to dispel myths about his health.
She declared, “Mental illness is a real disease that can affect anyone.” “He did not get better despite having a wife and two daughters who loved him and who loved him back.”
The couple has two daughters, Emma, 19, and Kitty, 22.
Regarding her father's passing, Kitty remarked, “We are not ashamed of talking about it.” It's not a stigma, and there's nothing to hide. We didn't say anything because we were attempting to shield him and help him recover earlier. Now is the right moment to break the news, no matter how terrible it is. In addition to wanting to be able to communicate and exchange ideas, we also want to increase awareness.
The Thorpe family is in the process of establishing a foundation in his honor.
“He had loved life and he loved us, but he just couldn't see a way out,” Kitty went on. Seeing how reclusive he had grown was heartbreaking. He was no longer the same. Seeing this guy imprisoned in Dad's body was odd.
Thorpe is survived by his brothers Ian and Alan, as well as his father Geoff and his two daughters.
