Fallout 5 is definitely something Bethesda plans to work on (if they aren't already), but we don't expect to see the next installment in the popular franchise for quite some time.
We know the developer has lots of other projects in the works at the moment despite the fact that it has been over 7 years since the release of Fallout 4 and over 3 years since the launch of Fallout 76. A new Indiana Jones game is in development alongside the long-awaited Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6.
However, as we noted, we know that Bethesda will get around to it because they admitted they have a one-page design document pertaining to Fallout 5. Then again, what else do we know about Fallout 5? What follows is a complete account of the situation as it currently stands.
Fallout; October 10, 1997
1997–2004: Role-playing; since 2004: Action role-playing
Fallout 76; November 14, 2018

Fallout 5 Release Date: When Will It Launch?
As of right now, there is no definite release date for Fallout 5 on any platform, so welcome to the speculating country! At this time, 2024 seems to be the earliest possible release date for Fallout 5, and even that seems charitable.
Bethesda has confirmed that they are developing Fallout 5, as we previously reported (in some sort of capacity). Todd Howard mentioned the studio's “one-pager on Fallout 5” plans in a November 2021 interview with IGN.
I'd like to find a way to expedite what we do, but I can't really say today or commit to anything, [like] what's going to happen [or] when,” Howard elaborated on the relatively general statement.
What Platforms Will It Be Available on?
Fallout 4 received a stand-alone virtual reality (VR) edition for the HTC Vive, Windows Mixed Reality, and Valve Index, joining previous iterations of the game on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles. The longevity of this platform diversity remains to be seen, but if Fallout 5 follows the releases of its immediate predecessors, Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6, it will launch initially on Game Pass, Xbox Series X, and PC.
Progress on the Fallout 5 Project
Todd Howard, Fallout 5's director, and executive producer has revealed that Bethesda has a “one-pager” for the game, but that it won't be ready until late 2021. Though brief, it was enough to get fans of the series talking about what they hope Fallout 5 would bring to the table in terms of location, story, and gameplay.
During an interview at E3 2022, Howard told IGN: “Our future is fairly packed; we're currently in pre-production on Elder Scrolls 6, and after that, we'll be working on Fallout 5.
These games take some time, but we do look at other projects occasionally as well. We're working hard to get them out as soon as possible, but we want to make sure they're perfect before we release them to the public.”
Potential Environment and Setting
It's unclear where exactly Fallout 5 will take place, but previous games have been set in the United States.
Washington served as the setting for Fallout 3, with Boston taking the stage for Fallout 4. In Fallout 76, the Commonwealth of West Virginia served as the setting for the player's return to the south. Only Fallout: New Vegas and the first two Fallout games were set in the west, whereas all other recent games took place on the east coast.
Where shall we go from here, then? Staying in the eastern United States is the safe bet. It's more likely to occur in some places than others, though.
In 2016, the title “Fallout New Orleans” was submitted as a trademark. This is not out of the question given that we have already explored the southern United States in downloadable content like Point Lookout for Fallout 3 and Far Harbor for Fallout 4.
Fallout Tactics, a real-time turn-based tactical role-playing game, took place in Chicago. If the Chicago outposts ED-E mentions in New Vegas are real, then it looks like we have some unfinished business in the Windy City.
Can we expect a retroactive Fallout in the next installment? Is it really 2077 again? We've been here before, during Operation Anchorage (the first DLC in Fallout 3).
Other than that?
Maybe we're not even heading where you think we are. Has the time come to travel overseas? Maybe we'll go to China or Russia to get an entirely new take on the tale. It's safe to assume that European countries will be high on the list of tourist destinations.
Single-player Fallout 5
For the time being, it appears that fans may rest easy knowing that not every next Bethesda title will have a strong emphasis on online play. For some games, we want to retain them as single-player,” Todd Howard said when asked if all future Bethesda titles would have multiplayer in an interview with the German gaming website GameStar. In the future, we will be concentrating on it.
Affiliate sales that come through Network N are rewarded with a commission.
While Howard does mention that they may have some social elements or integrations that they have yet to come up with, it appears that Fallout 5 will be focused on the single-player experience.
A Previously Held Opinion
Bethesda Game Studio is by no means an amateur when it comes to the creation of Fallout video games because of both Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 shattered sales records for their respective titles. This indicates that another monstrous creature will be added to the Fallout franchise.
