Small Town News: KPVM Pahrump Storyline and Plot

KPVM, which is owned and run by Vernon Van Winkle, better known as “Vern,” and his wife Ronda, a singer/songwriter, gives a glimpse into what it takes to broadcast the news in a very small desert town with a population of just 37,000 people. Vern and his small crew face significant obstacles in order to grow into the Las Vegas market, such as building a new tower to offer a better broadcast signal, creating new ideas to earn advertising income, and extending their tales beyond local interests. In addition, KPVM must manage the heated political atmosphere and its own internal political leanings in the months leading up to the election for president in 2020. While attempting to remain impartial and increase viewership. However, in this period of contentious politics, the series displays deeper regard and friendship for people who have opposing viewpoints than is often depicted in the national media. Pahrump and KPVM include individuals from all walks of life who share a feeling of community, politeness, camaraderie, and humour.

While working on their documentary Heidi Fleiss: The Would-Be Madam of Crystal, Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato came upon KPVM-LD. The two wanted to propose a television series about the station. Still, they were unable to find a network interested in a pilot.

Public-access television, according to Bailey and Barbato, is also a breeding place for new talent and ideas.

The tale of KPVM Pahrump, a small-town news station, is one of persistence.

The content in the docuseries may appear sparse. Still, the personalities at KPVM approach each day as if it were a life or death situation for the station (“Each day costs money,” Vern explains).

Their investment motivates us to invest as well.

This series, set in a town where few people reside and even fewer have heard of, manages to humanise characters who would otherwise be easy to dismiss while simultaneously delivering a side narrative about the precarious status of local reporting – an issue that many Americans are unaware of — to boot.

Small Town News: KPVM Pahrump is proof that “small” does not equal “insignificant.”
