At the age of two, Elizabeth Claire Kemper gave birth to Ellie Kemper in Kansas City, Missouri, on May 2nd of that year. Ellie's ancestors are William Thornton Kemper, a railroad and banking entrepreneur, and the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum in St. Louis, which bears her grandmother's name. St. Louis is where she grew up with her mother, Dotty; her father, David; and three brothers and sisters.
Having been a member of one of Missouri's wealthiest families, David served as CEO and chairman of Commerce Bancshares for over two decades. A TV writer and producer nominated for an Emmy for her work on such shows as “The Office” and “Silicon Valley,” Carrie Kemper is the younger sister of Kemper.
