What Happened to Levi in Attack on Titan?
Since it's important to explain the full context of Levi's story in order for you to understand why things played out as they did, we've decided to start by giving you a brief introduction to the events that occurred before the final War for Paradise arc; we'll then give you a more in-depth look into Levi's role in the final arc.
Captain of the Research Corps, Levi Ackermann is universally considered as humanity's strongest soldier. Being from a poor family, he lost his mother early on to illness, and so he was raised by his serial murderer uncle Kenny Ackermann.
Levi and his comrades Isabel Magnolia and Farlan Church eventually turned to crime in the capital's Underworld. They had originally joined the Research Corps to murder Erwin Smith on the commission of a corrupt noble, but following their deaths at the hands of a Titan, Levi shattered the creature piece by piece, activating his Ackermann talents.
At first, Levi is unwilling to allow his subordinates to partake in the wine imported from Marley. Nevertheless, he soon relents and tells them to drink responsibly or risk losing their jobs.
A few days later, Zeke sits down with Levi in front of a campfire and details the steps he took to turn the residents of Ragako into Titans. Once Zeke finishes explaining, Levi says he is horrified by his lack of guilt and that human life is obviously nothing to him.
He orders the tail to be changed and Zeke to be fed to a Yeagerist while he waits for Historia to give birth, boiling with wrath at the thought that all these murders have been in vain and that Eren betrays him.
Historia believed that after the queen had given birth, she would consume the Yeagerist army of the Beast Titan and take control of the Titan of Zeke. The final communication to return to Pixis and reveal his plan comes from Levi.
When Eren's Titan has been transformed, Armin returns to Salta while Levi and the others go back to their home. Reiner's survival brings relief from the citadel, but the survival of Eren and the Source of All Living Matter brings disappointment.
Connie proposes eliminating the Source, but Levi feels killing Eren is their only option. The smoke from the Source fills the fortress before they can launch another attack on Eren. When Levi realizes that the smoke would transform the Eldians in the fortress into Titans, he instructs Mikasa and Pieck to leave the fortress with him on Falco to avoid danger.
Pieck leaves to aid Reiner in his battle against the centipede, while Falco leads Levi and Mikasa directly to Eren. Levi figures out how to go inside Mikasa's Titan's mouth using a thunder spear, and he kills Eren.
Levi leans against a rock as the Eldian families begin to reunite and the Titans' power crumbles. He has a vision of his departed friends looking on and wonders if they are able to see the fruits of their labor.
Levi responds with a hello to the soldiers, who in turn greet him. After the Battle of Salta, Levi stayed in Marley for three years. Because of his injuries, he must use a wheelchair the rest of his life, and Gabi and Falco are responsible for his care.
