Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which has finally been released in theatres, serves as a prequel to what we know about Doctor Strange 3.
The fate of the original Avengers and their friends was in doubt when they were mainly replaced by legacy heroes in Doctor Strange 2, and it wasn't apparent whether or not the film would be Benedict Cumberbatch's final outing as the Master of the Mystic Arts. However, the sequel laid the groundwork for a possible Doctor Strange 3 sequel.
According to popular belief, Doctor Strange 2 was widely expected to see the Illuminati bringing Stephen Strange to trial for his spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home that cracked the multiverse. However, this was not the case, with the Illuminati being more concerned with Strange's journey across the multiverse with America Chavez and the crimes of the other Doctor Strange than anything else.
Rather than true villain Scarlet Witch and the Darkhold spellbook, they considered Doctor Strange a considerably greater menace.
Doctor Strange 3 Cast
There would be no Doctor Strange 3 if Benedict Cumberbatch did not reprise his role as Steven Strange. Most of Marvel's leading ladies have completed three solo films before retiring from the screen. Chris Hemsworth's Thor is the single exception, having made it to the fourth installment.
Furthermore, it isn't easy to picture a threequel without Sorcerer Supreme Wong – and given how frequently he appears in earlier MCU films, we feel Wong will be around for quite some time.
As for Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda, often known as the Scarlet Witch, her story arc with Doctor Strange concluded. Now that Marvel has made its way into the multiverse, there is always the possibility of something greater.
Rachel McAdams, who played Christine Palmer, could easily make a cameo appearance.
Doctor Strange 3 might also feature Xochitl Gomez, who makes her MCU debut as the multiverse-hopping America Chavez in Doctor Strange's upcoming film. That doesn't rule out the possibility of her participating in other films, especially given that we haven't received any confirmation concerning a Young Avengers feature (in which she would most certainly play a key role).
If you haven't watched the movie yet, don't go any farther than the photo below since spoilers will be.
What Exactly is the Plot of Doctor Strange 3?
The Multiverse of Madness left up with Doctor Strange 3, and we expect the film to pick up where it left off with the previous installment. In all likelihood, Stephen will continue to struggle with the aftereffects of the black magic he employed during his battle with Wanda. The magician from Bleeker Street will also have to deal with the arrival of Clea, who has just moved in (Charlize Theron).
Clea is Strange's disciple who eventually becomes his wife before taking over as the Sorcerer Supreme of the Earth when it comes to comic books.
Given that Clea is tied to the Dread Dormammu, the evil entity Stephen fought in his first film, the peril she warns Strange about may be the reappearance of the Dread Dormammu.
Who knows, though, because you can never tell which direction the MCU will go. During our conversation with Benedict Wong regarding a possible sequel, he shared his concept for a third Strange film.
Doctor Strange 3 will take place during the Secret Wars, according to “Yeah, I suppose the Secret Wars would be [where I want Doctor Strange 3 to take place].” The concept of a Secret Wars-style campaign appealed to him, he said. “Get everyone together, introduce a new set [of foes],” he said.

The Release Date for Doctor Strange 3
If Doctor Strange 3 does come to fruition, it will not hit theatres for a considerable amount of time. Marvel has already planned out their movie release schedules for the end of 2023. The Fantastic Four, Blade and Captain America 4 are just a few of the films currently in development that have not yet been given a release date but are well along in the production process.
Even if Marvel is already working on Doctor Strange 3, moviegoers shouldn't expect to see it until late 2024, with a release date of 2025 or 2026 being more likely in the future.
