Disenchanted Coming Up With the Blend of Comedy & Romance

“Enchanted” was a critical and financial success for Disney, as it poked fun at the studio’s out-of-date animated princess fairy tale movie formula while still turning a tidy profit and ushering in a new age of Disney films.

In the mid-2000s, things were different. Outside of “Shrek” and its sequel, films rarely dared to mock Disney’s animated princess fairy tale movies. Amy Adams was just starting to make a name for herself thanks to her Oscar-nominated performance in 2005’s “Junebug,” and outside of “Shrek” and its sequel, films rarely dared to mock Disney’s animated princess fairy tale movies.

Then there was 2007’s “Enchanted,” a live-action/animation hybrid starring Adams as Giselle, a comically wide-eyed young woman who is dragged from the fantastical, animated realm of Andalasia into real-world New York City — a place where (as Giselle soon discovers), relationships are more complicated and spontaneous song-and-dance is uncommon.

Let’s Fall Deep into Disenchanted

As a sequel to the 2007 film Enchanted, Disenchanted is a forthcoming American live-action/animated movie with a blend of music, fantasy, romantic and at last comedy film produced by Walt Disney Pictures and directed and co-written by Adam Shankman.

Starting in the fall of 2022, “Disenchanted” will be available only on Disney+. Disney has been working on a sequel to “Enchanted” since 2010, when the studio planned to release the picture a year later. Following that, the film found itself between a rock and a hard place, with many writers being brought on board to create and rewrite the screenplay.

While it appeared in late 2016 that “Disenchanted” was on the verge of breaking out of pre-production hell, the film didn’t get the official go-ahead until December 2020, when Disney announced the film during its Investors Day event.

Given Adams’ and her “Enchanted” co-stars’ hectic schedules since the film’s release, it’s probable, if not likely, that scheduling was another stumbling block for the sequel. That, plus, of course, changes in the theatrical scene, with superhero, sci-fi, and fantasy franchises sweeping the multiplex in the 2010s, as well as Disney’s live-action remakes of its animated films becoming a cottage business.

It’s no surprise that Disney didn’t regard “Disenchanted” as a major priority during this era, with rom-coms primarily consigned to streaming platforms and feature musicals enjoying uneven box office performance.
