As a child, Dharmendra didn't want to go to school and would often bother her mother on the way. He went to Government Senior Secondary School, Lalton Kalan, Ludhiana, Punjab, for his high school education.

One day, his mother was reading Filmfare and saw an ad for a movie by Bimal Roy and Guru Dutt. She told him to take part in it. Then, Dharmendra went to Malerkotla to have Jaan Mohammed (John & Sons) work on his portfolio, and he applied to participate. Filmfare Magazine gave him the “New Talent Hunt Award,” and he moved to Mumbai to find work.
