War movies based on actual historical events have always been interesting because they show how brutal war is for soldiers. From gunfights on the battlefield and in the trenches to dogfights in the air or battles between warships at sea to international espionage, war movies have a lot of ways to show how dangerous life can be.
Throughout the history of war, these life-or-death situations have given rise to stories of brave people. There are also many stories, especially about people who may not be as well-known or well-known to the public.
Thankfully, many filmmakers have taken on the task of showing people less well-known historical events or war heroes. Whether it's Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk or Dominic Cooke's The Courier, it's an excellent chance for moviegoers to learn about events or people who might not have been taught in school.
Sony Pictures Entertainment and Black Label Media will release the historical war movie Devotion in October this year. It will be part of this group of movies. Before we watch this war movie about planes, here's what we know so far about Devotion.
What is Devotion About?
Based on Adam Makos's book Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice, the movie will be about Ensign Jesse Brown, the Navy's first African-American carrier pilot, and Lieutenant Thomas “Tom” Hudner, who was his wingman.
During the Korean War, the two were well-known pilots for the US Navy. The pilots come from different racial and economic backgrounds. They meet for the first time when they join Strike Fighter Squadron 32 and agree to serve and be sent to Korea before the Korean War.
During segregation and war, Brown and Hudner's friendship stands out. This is especially true when one of their planes gets shot down enemy lines. Here is what the movie's website says about it.
Date of Release
The film will be shown for the first time on September 12, 2022, at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival. It will then be delivered to the public on November 23, 2022.
The Cast of Devotion
The movie stars Jonathan Majors (Loki, Lovecraft Country, When We Rise), Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick, Hidden Figures), Joe Jonas (Camp Rock, Grease Live! ), Christina Jackson (The Night House, Outsiders, Deception), Nick Hargrove (Counterpart, Charmed), Spencer Neville (Ozark, Tunde), and Thomas Sadoski (Newsroom, John Wick, Life in Pieces).
Jake Crane (Under) and Jonathan A. H. Stewart wrote the script for the movie (The Axmann Conspiracy, Clean). Along with J.D. Dillard, Molly Smith, Rachel Smith, Thad Luckinbill, and Trent Luckinbill, Glen Powell joined as an executive producer. J.D. Dillard is in charge of it (Sleight, Sweetheart).
Do You Have to Read the Book Before Watching Devotion?
It's up to the audience to decide if they want to read the book before or after seeing the movie. It's unnecessary since the book is being turned into a film, showing the same story differently.
The book is always available, though, for people in the audience who want to learn more about Brown and Hudner's history. If people want to read the book before seeing the movie, they can get it in hard copy or as an electronic book for Kindle from Amazon.
When and Where Was Devotion Filmed?
The primary filming for the movie started in February 2021 and continued until April 2021. Most of the filming took place in Savannah, Georgia, but some also happened in Charleston, South Carolina, and Wenatchee, Washington.
Is the Story in the Movie Devotion Real?
“The air war epic Devotion is based on the best-selling book of the same name. It tells the scary true story of two of the best fighter pilots in the US Navy during the Korean War. Because of their heroic actions, they would become the most famous wingmen in the Navy.”
