Veronica Gutiérrez is a cosmetologist and Melvin Booker was a point guard at Missouri in 1994 who was voted Big Eight Player of the Year. When Gutiérrez's father was playing professional basketball for the Grand Rapids Hoops of the Continental Basketball Association in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he met his mother.

He was reared by his mother, who is said to be of Mexican and Puerto Rican origin, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  while his father, an African-American professional basketball player, was pursuing his own career abroad.

 During the summer, he frequently visited his father. Danilo Gallinari invited him to play one-on-one with him when he was just 12 years old while visiting him in Milan.
